Plot

When SpongeBob is informed that the annual jellyfishing convention in Ukelele Bottom is on this weekend, he replies that no-one will be here to take care of Gary, and that he can't come. He asks Squidward, who refuses. However, Squidward changes his mind when he hears that this means SpongeBob and Patrick will be gone. SpongeBob shows Squidward how to take care of Gary, but he isn't listening. When SpongeBob and Patrick go away, Squidward forgets all about Gary.

Three days later, he hears Gary meow, and realizes that he forgot the snail. He quickly tries to feed him, but Gary refuses to eat. SpongeBob calls the vet, and says Gary has to have an injection of snail plasma. Squidward tries to poke the syringe into Gary while SpongeBob is holding him up, but SpongeBob keeps snatching Gary away, saying that Squidward is doing it too fast. He continues to do this, until Squidward accidentally injects SpongeBob. Squidward tells SpongeBob that nothing will happen to him, but something does. In the night, as SpongeBob tries to serve Gary some dinner, he eats all of it himself.(As his metabolism was changed by the effects of the plasma.) When SpongeBob looks in a mirror, his eyes stretch, his arms and legs shrivel up and fall off, and his body stretches. He realizes that he is turning into a snail, and goes to Squidward for help. Squidward is terrified at the sight of the SpongeSnail and runs around his house trying to escape him. After a few minutes of this, he accidentally gets injected with the syringe and turns into a snail. In the next scene, Gary, SpongeSnail and SquidSnail are singing "Meow, Meow, Meow, Meow" (to the tune of "Yo ho blow the man down") and Patrick yells " Will you clam up?!" and throws a shoe at SquidSnail.

Trivia/Goofs

• This is one of the least seen episodes seen on TV, because it is paired with a holiday episode.
• On the following DVD containing this episode, there is a deleted scene where Squidward is turning into a snail.
• SpongeBob has fallen asleep in his chair. When the rooster crows he has what seems to be the beginning of a growing beard. When he jumps off the chair the beard is gone.
• SpongeBob says "That's okay, I'm a lefty anyway," even though it was his left arm that retracted first.
• Another town named Ukulele Bottom is mentioned in this episode.
• All the nets on the bus to Ukulele Bottom are square.
• The title of this episode refers to the 1957 Michael Landon film I Was a Teenage Werewolf.
• When Squidward gets in bed he says he hopes that he never sees a snail again, but in The Great Snail Race, he adopts Snellie, who is a snail.
• In this episode, SpongeBob tastes Gary's food. However, in Missing Identity, he says, "I've been feeding this to Gary for years and I don't even know what it tastes like". Perhaps this could have been a different type of Snail Food, or he doesn't remember the events of this episode.In Dumped he also eats Gary's food. It is also possible this episode took place before Missing Identity.
• This episode's time card, 3 Days Later resembles the title card for Squidville, minus the recoloration for the flowers.It's also the only time card ever without the narrater's voice.
• SpongeBob said that he had all of the cans of Gary's snail food marked, but it wasn't mentioned in closed captions.
• When SpongeBob morphs into a snail, it is very similar to how super-powered children turn into animals they touch in the former book and TV Series Animorphs. However, he morphs much more slowly.

SpongeBob: (Gary is on his exercise wheel) Exercise time is over, Gary. (Takes him off the wheel) We don't want you getting too thin. (holds up a squishy, green ball) Here, boy. Fetch! (He throws the ball. Gary goes after it. Slowly. While waiting, Sponge takes out a newspaper and starts reading. When morning arrives, Gary crawls over to him and spits out the ball)
Gary: Meow.
SpongeBob: Huh? (he sees the ball on the floor) Good job, Gary! I love you, Gary. Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary, Gary. (he scratches Gary's chin, which makes him purr. Gary climbs up on Sponge) Down, boy! (Patrick enters, jellyfishing net in hand)
Patrick: (dancing) SpongeBob! Are you ready? Are you ready? Are you ready?
SpongeBob: For what
Patrick: The annual jellyfish convention in Ukulele Bottom this weekend! So, you ready or what?
SpongeBob: That was this weekend? I can't go, I don't have anyone to take care of Gary! (Squidward knocks on the door. SpongeBob opens)
Squidward: Would you please stop leaving your undergarments on my front lawn?!
SpongeBob: Squidward, could you watch Gary this weekend?
Squidward: What's a Gary?
SpongeBob: Not a Gary. Gary. He's my pet snail. (shows Gary to Squid) Say hello! (Gary is drooling)
Squidward: Yuck. You actually care for that thing?
SpongeBob: I love Gary!
Squidward: Well, I don't. Get somebody else. (walks off)
SpongeBob: I guess we can't go away this weekend after all, Patrick. (Squidward stops walking away and reverses his steps)
Squidward: Go away? You mean, if I watch Gary, you guys will be gone ALL weekend?
SpongeBob: Actually, a 3-day weekend.
Squidward: As in, not here for 3 days?
SpongeBob: Yeah, but you've already said you can't do it. We understand.
Patrick: Don't feel bad, Squidward. The three of us can still have our own jellyfish convention at your house.
Squidward: I changed my mind. You guys deserve a weekend away.
