Synopsis[]
Inside the Star house, Patrick is shown fishing into the fireplace as part of "Pat-Star-Piece Theatre." He fishes a book outside of the fireplace, which reminds him to look for his storybook of the day. He climbs the bookshelf to look for the one he needs, but soon falls after getting bit by a clam. Patrick is caught by his self-help book and reaches the top of his bookshelf. He again falls after being hit by a drone. He finds the book Downtown Patty and prepares to read, but is soon interrupted by a stinky smell. Patrick checks the house for the smell, but is unable to identify it.

Patrick's Stench Safari.
Patrick and Squidina get some smell-related supplies to identify the stench. They run into Cecil and investigate his stew, but it is not the source of the stench, even after extra trash-related ingredients are added, in which Cecil transforms into a monster as a result. While Patrick finds another nose to identify the smell, Squidina plays a film about noses featuring Perch Perkins.
After the film, Patrick and Squidina continue investigating, next entering GrandPat's room. GrandPat shows them various things that could be the source of the smell, but none of them are the smell Patrick and Squidina are looking for. They next investigate the bathroom, but Tinkle comes out and barks at Patrick. Bunny soon shows up to clean Tinkle and take him for a walk.

Patrick smells something from Granny Tentacles' house.
As Bunny leaves, the smell enters the house from outside. The stenches from outside come from a garbage can, a worm, and Slappy's skunk. None of which are what Patrick and Squidina are looking for, but they soon sense a bunch of stink coming from Granny Tentacles' house. Patrick and Squidina enter the house to investigate. They look through a bunch of objects in the house and are unable to find them, but a smell touches Patrick from behind a door.
Patrick and Squidina find the smell coming from Granny Tentacles' kitchen oven in her house. They see what's inside and first think she is a cannibal, but she explains to them that it is actually a cabbage surprise. She offers them pickle cabbage cupcakes as they leave. After Patrick and Squidina leave, Granny Tentacles places the cabbage surprise on her grocery gollum, and it busts out the house. Granny Tentacles laughs, but she then senses a stinky smell, as the episode ends.

Production notes[]
- Dave said that prior to the episode's premiere that it would be "plussed by the brilliant minds of Ian Vazquez, Simon Edwards, Eddie Trigueros and Mike Geiger." He called the episode "a fun one!"[17]
- Waller said that the Ol'Factory sequence was "one of his favorites ever."[18]
Ian Vazquez:
- "This episode was a challenge but also had a lot of opportunities to add a bunch of little gags of my own like drawing Cecil's mustache getting blown off...oh, and [monster Cecil] too."[11]
- This was Ian's first time drawing Squidina on the show, saying that "she is a lot of fun and there are some Future Bits I'm really excited to share! In the future."[19]
- "Making Perch as stupid looking as possible to the track was a unique delight. (And finding those placeholder images)"[20]
- "The nose sequence [was] unique in that it's the only one on the show I boarded from scratch, and thought it was tough it was worth it to see how gorgeous this all looked in color! I got to design [the silly nasal elves] and push the whole bit into fanciful Seuss-land and the design team nailed it!"[5] Ian believed that "the design team knocked it out of the park!",[4] and that, alike to smug Perch, was "so happy my Nose Elves made it to final."[4]
- His favorite parts of the episode were with GrandPat.[4]

Trivia[]
General[]
- This episode was paired up with a rerun of "The Haunting of Star House" during the original airing, but has since been re-airing with "Squidina's Little Helper."[22]
- This episode marks the return of Zeus Cervas as a storyboard director.
- Ian Vazquez storyboarded the ol'factory sequence from scratch, making it the first time he added his own scene to the final storyboards.[5][4]

Mike Geiger's storyboard.

A redone final drawing by Eddie Trigueros.
- Mike Geiger's plussed storyboard scenes in this episode were later redone by Eddie Trigueros. Dave Cunningham, the supervising director of this episode, says that this is a case of a scene receiving multiple plussing passes rather than just one.[23]
- In the original storyboards for the episode, one of the images of noses flashing by after Perch mentions them was Squidward's nose with little hairs on it instead of a human nose.
- The Olfactory workers (also known as the "Silly Nasal Elves") all have official names that were all listed out by Ian Vazquez,[6] but due to a goof (accidentally listed as "in order of appearance") the names of which character each one belonged to are currently unknown, although he said at some point he would reveal them in a later tweet, and let the viewer decide those names up to their own interpretation.[24]
- Miss Gristlepuss appears for the first time since "Gramma's Secret Recipe."
- Mr. Stinky appears for the first time since his debut in "Pineapple Invasion".
- This episode marks the second time Patrick dislikes bad smells with a nose in the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. The first was "No Nose Knows" in the main series.
Episode references[]
- Pat-Star-Piece Theatre from "Swamp Mates" returns in this episode.
- Various references to past episodes can be seen on Patrick's bookshelf:
- One of the books is called Dirty Dan which is a reference to "Survival of the Idiots."
- Another of the books is called The Ugly Barnacle is a reference to "Something Smells."
- Another of the books is called Washing an Old Person, which is a reference to "I Had an Accident."
- Cavemen Technology is a reference to "Wet Painters."
- The Magical Talking Trash Can is a reference to "Wishing You Well."
Cultural references[]
- This episode's title is a reference to the phrase "I smell a rat."
- "Pat-Star-Piece Theatre" references the American public television series Masterpiece Theatre and borrows its theme music, composed by Jean-Joseph Mouret, for the episode.
- Downtown Patty is a parody of Downton Abbey.
- One of Patrick's noses resembles Scooby-Doo's nose.
- Another one of Patrick's noses resembles Jimmy Durante's. When he puts it on, he even says one of his catchphrases, that being "ha-cha-cha-cha-cha-chaaa!"
- The Olfactory and its workers were pushed by the series' design team into seemingly taking inspiration from Dr. Seuss.[5]
- The Booger Machine Room, or the Snot Foundry found in the Olfactory is an homage the Slime Fountain at the old 1990 - 2005 Nickelodeon Studios in Universal Orlando.[1]
- The nozzle at the bottom of the machine was based on the Nickelodeon Slime: Super Studio playset sold in 2017.[25]
- Brian Morante shared a story about Nickelodeon factory tubes in one of the replies to a production art thread for this episode: "When they were building the new Nick building and asking for suggestions, I pitched the idea of clear pipes of green slime running all through the building. Also a fireman's pole between floors. Suggestions ignored."[26] Ian Vazquez (one of the storyboard artists on this episode) jokingly replied "What? That's insane! How on earth do they expect us to get any work done!"[27]
