"Hot Crossed Nuts" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 13. In this episode, Sandy's homemade snack becomes a big hit at the Krusty Krab.

Synopsis[]
SpongeBob serving Sandy's meal.
At the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob serves Sandy a meal, but she simply accepts the drink and not the food. Rather, she takes out a bag of barbecue nuts from home. SpongeBob is nervous because outside food is not allowed at the Krusty Krab, but once he tries one of the nuts, he likes it. Mr. Krabs finds out, and confiscates Sandy's food. However, he tries one of the nuts out of curiosity, and decides to hire Sandy at the Krusty Krab. Although she is hesitant at having a job, SpongeBob convinces her to stay and work with him.

Sandy tells Mr. Krabs that she needs a barbecue grill, so he fashions one up out of stuff around the Krusty Krab. He puts the barbecue nuts as today's special. Squidward hands SpongeBob orders, which are all for Krabby Patties, and none for Sandy's nuts. SpongeBob advertises the nuts to Bubble Bass, who tastes one and tells everyone how good they are. SpongeBob and Sandy cook up plenty of nuts and Krabby Patties, but Sandy's dish proves more popular overall. Mr. Krabs renovates the restaurant into Kowboy Krab's Nut Shack and brings in more grills for Sandy. SpongeBob finds himself saddened by not having as much work to do, and is so overwhelmed by the smoke from the grills that he leaves the restaurant.
Mr. Krabs goes to throw a bag of Krabby Patties away, and sees a despondent SpongeBob roasting a Krabby Patty over a trash fire. SpongeBob throws himself into the trash, and a worried Sandy asks if he is okay. Mr. Krabs calls her back in to cook more nuts. However, she throws them all into the garbage disposal, then leaves the restaurant, so that SpongeBob can get his job back. The customers riot and gang up on Mr. Krabs, until one takes a bite of a table and realizes that it has been flavored from the smoke. They eat the entire restaurant, and SpongeBob now finds an entire line of customers ready for Krabby Patties. Mr. Krabs declares them to be double the price, but Sandy ties him up and forces him to make SpongeBob give the patties away for free.

On Independence Day 2022, series board artist Benjamin Arcand posted a simple sketch of SpongeBob on Twitter, stating "Another day, another Sponge."[1]
Dave Cunningham replied to the tweet, which featured him hinting at this episode's existence (labeling it as the "nuts" episode) - stating that Arcand drew the "great" rough storyboards for this segment, and that he was going to get plussing work on it started sometime during that week.[2] Arcand replied to the comment the following day thanking Cunningham, and said that he couldn't "wait to see how nuts this one will end up 🔥 It's in good hands, that's for sure! :)"[3] This confirmed that Arcand had officially returned to the series (at least for the foreseeable future.)
This episode's title and premise were later confirmed by Cartoonlounge.de on December 20, 2022.[4]

- Arcand said that Dave Cunningham and his team made the rough storyboards for this episode even better, and stated that Danny Giovanni wrote a solid script with a lot of gags coming straight from it.[5]
- Arcand's favorite moment from the episode was SpongeBob's line "Hi Sandy, just toasting my buns" when Sandy sees him outside, having lost his mojo and living outside of the Krusty Krab.[7]
- In the rough storyboards of the episode, SpongeBob ties the trash bag over himself rather than just going in the can. Arcand said that "SB can let the patties behind." "It's safer for his fragile Sponge health, PLUS it reads clearer."[8]

- This episode is similar to that of "Krusty Dogs," as both episodes have a new menu item overtake the Krabby Patty.
- This episode's plot is also similar to that of "Sandy's Nutmare" from season 9, as it also involves the success of a homemade snack by Sandy.
- The Krusty Krab was previously seen in a western-themed state in a cutaway gag from "Truth or Square," and an actual old-time western version of it (the Krusty Kantina) was seen in "Pest of the West."
- This episode was paired up with a rerun of "Ride Patrick Ride" during the original American airing.[9]
- This marks the third episode in which Sandy works at the Krusty Krab. The first is "Karate Choppers" and the second is "Krabby Patty Creature Feature."
- Two changes were made to this episode during production:
- "12th Street Rag" initially played during the scene in which SpongeBob and Sandy cook up nuts and patties for the customers, instead of "Another Best Day Ever".[5]
- When SpongeBob is seen outside sadly watching Mr. Krabs throw out a bunch of Krabby Patties away, he puts himself into the bare trash can. In the rough storyboards, he ties a trash bag over himself before he does so. But in the final episode, he goes in the trash bin, and closes the lid on him.[8]

- This episode's title references the term "hot cross buns," which is both a food and a nursery rhyme.
- SpongeBob's song "Sandy's in the Kitchen With SpongeBob" has its tune replicated from the 1894 song "I've Been Working on the Railroad."
- The song's theme, similar to the segments title, is inspired by a popular household tune.
- The song's title has the same naming scheme as the season 7 episode, "Someone's in the Kitchen with Sandy."
Errors[]
SpongeBob's arm and sleeve is the same color as Squidward's.
- When SpongeBob and Sandy deliver a Krabby Patty and a plate of the barbecue nuts respectively, the former's arm and sleeve are colored in Squidward's skin and shirt palette.
The lines on Incidental 37A's dorsal fin are missing.
- The lines on Incidental 37A's dorsal fin are missing for a single frame while he arises from Incidental 180's pants.
- When Sandy leaves the Krusty Krab, the western look was still present. But when the customers start eating the entire restaurant, the normal look is now shown in one shot.
- In two scenes, SpongeBob's eyelashes disappear.
