Synopsis

In the beginning of the episode, Mr. Krabs rushes to the Krusty Krab while shouting and panicking like a maniac, telling his customers of the "return of the hooks." The other fish ignore him, while SpongeBob is confused, and Mr. Krabs tells him that he has to try not to go near a hook, or he will be brought up to the surface and eaten or sold at a Gift Shop. As SpongeBob returns to the grill, Patrick shows up from outside the window, saying that the new carnival has come to town, insisting that SpongeBob comes with him. He agrees, assuming that he's not quitting work but just taking a break.

"Does this look dangerous?"

The two friends go to the carnival, but much to SpongeBob's horror, the "carnival" is really the site of the hooks that Mr. Krabs tried to warn everyone about. Patrick deliberately hooks himself and shoots up towards the surface. SpongeBob panics with concern until Patrick returns, explaining that he jumped off and floated down just before he reached the surface. Ignoring what Mr. Krabs said, SpongeBob then plays "hooky" with Patrick.

Meanwhile, at the Krusty Krab, Squidward has taken SpongeBob's place as the fry cook for the time being, and is not making the Krabby Patties correctly, causing a mob of hungry customers to criticize his poor cooking skills. Mr. Krabs bursts out of his office to confront the ruckus and is informed by Squidward that SpongeBob "took a break," making Mr. Krabs angry as SpongeBob has disobeyed his work policy. Mr. Krabs then finds SpongeBob at Fish Hooks Park playing on the hooks with Patrick, shocked at his disobedience. He then scolds the duo for their dangerous behavior and has them make a sailor's promise never to go near the hooks again.

The next day, SpongeBob is heading off to work and keeps his promise about not playing on the hooks, until Patrick appears and pressures him to ignore Mr. Krabs and play on them anyway. As much as he is tempted, SpongeBob refuses, knowing what consequences pursue him should he break his promise. Eventually though, seeing a hook in the middle of the street ceases his resistance and SpongeBob then starts playing on the hooks once again. Unfortunately for him, this time he is unable to get off of it, as the hook is attached very tightly to his pants. He goes to confront Mr. Krabs outside of the Krusty Krab to tell him about his current predicament. Mr. Krabs tries to confirm whether or not SpongeBob broke his promise and continued playing on the hooks anyway, with the latter trying to hide the hook in his pants from view. SpongeBob finally admits to doing so in a regretful and apologetic voice. Mr. Krabs tells him that the only solution would be to take off his pants, which SpongeBob reluctantly does. Since the hook has got his underwear too, he is forced to remove that as well, but SpongeBob is very hesitant to out of humiliation. As he is about to be reeled in by the fisherman, he hangs onto the clam pole as a self-restraint method before the hook tears off the underwear instead and SpongeBob is sent flying onto the Krusty Krab doors naked, with Pearl and her friends laughing at him.

SpongeBob runs away horrified and humiliated. Squidward returns to the Krusty Krab with a fishing pole and SpongeBob's underwear, indicating that Mr. Krabs, Pearl, and Squidward got together to teach SpongeBob a lesson about hooks. Just before the episode is about to come to an end, Patrick is dropped off at his house by the bus, trapped inside a tuna can as karma for playing on the hooks, asking if anyone has a can opener.

• The episode's working title was going to be called "Hooks," However Apple TV UK uses the exact same title that it was originally going to be called.
• This episode premiered in Brazil on July 18, 2000, seven months before it premiered in the United States.
  • This episode premiered in Canada on October 21, 2000, four months before it premiered in the United States.
  • This episode premiered in Latin America on December 17, 2000, two months before it premiered in the United States.
• Before it was paired with "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II" on March 3, 2001, it presumably premiered by itself at an earlier date. The earliest known air date for this episode was on February 23, 2001, during Slime Time Live's U-Pick.
• This is the first episode in the series to premiere standalone.
• The title of this episode works on two levels: "Hooky" is a term for skipping work or school, referring to SpongeBob skipping work, and it also refers to the fish hooks that he and Patrick were playing on.

• In a promotion leading up to the release of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, the title character of said movie appeared in the lower-right-hand corner during a rerun of this episode and, using one of his inventions, temporarily transformed the cartoon into a puppet show during the scene where Mr. Krabs is making SpongeBob and Patrick recite an oath that he is giving.
• Mr. Krabs says that nobody has taken a break at the Krusty Krab since the "Chum Famine of '59," but SpongeBob had taken a break in "F.U.N." and was even sent home in "Suds" when Mr. Krabs learned that SpongeBob is too unwell to work, and Squidward even went on vacation in "Squeaky Boots" though it was because of being repeatedly annoyed by SpongeBob's squeaky boots.
• This is the first episode to use the APM track "Dramatic Encounter."

• This was Sherm Cohen's last episode as a writer and storyboard director.
• In the Filipino dub, after SpongeBob says, "What could be worse than that?," Mr. Krabs says, "They will sell you" instead of "Gift shops."
• This is the second episode where Squidward takes the role of a fry cook; the first is "Pickles." As in the latter, he continues to have terrible cooking skills in this episode.

Errors

• Even though SpongeBob, when hooked by Squidward, is being dragged away from the Krusty Krab, Squidward is standing in the restaurant.
• During one scene, there is a plastic sheet, which lays on top of a celluloid frame, that appears to have some damage to it. Thus, the damage of the slightly damaged plastic part makes the scene look like there is a random see-through jellyfish on the screen.
• When Mr. Krabs says "Squidward," the latter moves his lips to what Mr. Krabs said.
• Squidward's fishing line is small in the end, and the end of the fishing pole is at the Krusty Krab. When SpongeBob is attached to it, the line is massively long, and the fishing pole ends to the top of the ocean.
• When SpongeBob's underwear is attached to the hook, they are hooked through the back of them and they tear off, but when Squidward is revealed to be the one using the fishing pole, SpongeBob's underwear is intact and the hook is now hooked through the front of them.
• Mr. Krabs states that no one has taken a break at the Krusty Krab since the famine of '59, which can be assumed to be 1959. However, Mr. Krabs was born in 1942, which would mean he owned the Krusty Krab when he was at 16 or 17, which is not possible since he spent some time in the Navy and as a pirate before he opened up the Krusty Krab, not to mention he would not have been legally old enough to own a business at that time.Template:Debatable

The "Help Wanted" sign and SpongeBob's tongue are missing.

• The Help Wanted sign disappears after SpongeBob is flung to the door.
• SpongeBob's tongue disappears when he screams in horror at being naked in front of Pearl and her friends.
• Before SpongeBob takes off his pants, his pants are the only thing that is hooked to the fish hook. Later in the scene, his underwear is hooked as well.
