Synopsis

Mr. Krabs rushes to the Krusty Krab while shouting and panicking like a maniac, telling his customers of the "return of the hooks." The other fish ignore him, while SpongeBob is confused, and Mr. Krabs tells him that he has to try not to go near a hook, or he will be brought up to the surface and eaten or sold at a gift shop. Patrick shows up, saying that the carnival has come to town, insisting that SpongeBob comes with him. He agrees, assuming that he's not quitting work but just taking a break.

The two friends go to the carnival, but much to SpongeBob's horror, the "carnival" is really the site of the hooks that Mr. Krabs tried to warn everyone about. Patrick deliberately hooks himself and shoots up towards the surface.

"Does this look dangerous?"

SpongeBob panics, wails, and cries, until he sees Patrick again, who explains that he jumped off and floated down just before he reached the surface. Ignoring what Mr. Krabs said, SpongeBob then plays "hooky" with Patrick.

Meanwhile, at the Krusty Krab, Squidward isn't making the patties correctly (even defensively asking why the Bikini Bottomites even want to eat Krabby Patties), and Mr. Krabs asks him what happened. Squidward says that SpongeBob took a break and isn't back yet. Mr. Krabs thinks Squidward is playing around with him, and he asks Squidward to repeat what he said. After hearing this the second time, Mr. Krabs runs over to the hooks and runs up to SpongeBob and Patrick to catch them; meanwhile, Squidward gets mauled by the hungry mob of customers. Mr. Krabs misses catching them the first time, but once they float down, Mr. Krabs grabs them and makes them promise to never go near the hooks again. However, the very next day, Patrick persuades SpongeBob to play "hooky" again, once again ignoring what Mr. Krabs said. SpongeBob denies Patrick's request, but he goes to the hooks anyway.

Eventually, SpongeBob gets his clothes caught on a hook, and, terrified, runs to the Krusty Krab for help. He tries to cover it up, but the hook pulls him in every time he lies, until he is forced to tell the truth. Mr. Krabs tells SpongeBob that the only way to remove the hook is to take off his clothes- right in front of Pearl and her friends. After being persuaded, he takes off his pants, revealing his underwear, only for Mr. Krabs to tell him that he needs to remove everything. Naturally, SpongeBob doesn't want to take off his underwear, so Mr. Krabs tells him he'll have to find another fry cook, hopefully one that will listen to him. Terrified, SpongeBob pulls on The Krusty Krab's sign and the hook takes his underpants away. SpongeBob breathes a sigh of relief, but the sign flings him into the door. Pearl and her friends tease SpongeBob and laugh at him for being naked, calling him "SpongeBob NudeyPants." Utterly humiliated, SpongeBob screams and runs away from the Krusty Krab and back to his house.

Then, it is revealed that Squidward was the one who hooked SpongeBob and got him naked, and that Mr. Krabs told him to do that because SpongeBob needed to learn his lesson. When Squidward pulls the ripped underwear into the Krusty Krab, Mr. Krabs congratulates him and Squidward tells Mr. Krabs that he thinks that SpongeBob will remember the humiliation for a long time. Both Squidward and Mr. Krabs laugh as SpongeBob runs all the way home. The episode ends with Patrick, now trapped in a tuna can. He gets dropped off from the bus shortly after SpongeBob comes back home and requests a can opener to free him.

"SpongeBob and Pat as "rebels without a cause" (or a brain), riding fishermen's hooks and jumping off just before being yanked ashore. This episode inspired the song "Riding the Hook" on The Best Day Ever CD, with legendary punk rocker Tommy Ramone playing drums!"

General

• Although this episode premiered in 2001, it was made in 2000 according to the credits.
• This episode premiered in Canada on Friday, January 12, 2001, before it aired in the United States.
• The title of this episode works on two levels: "Hooky" is a term for skipping work or school, referring to SpongeBob skipping work, and it also refers to the fish hooks that he was playing on.
• There is a plug-and-play TV game of SpongeBob Games by Jakks Pacific that includes a mini-game based on this episode. In the game, SpongeBob must protect everyone, even an unusually large Plankton, from the hooks. Many players are fooled by Plankton's appearance, and let him get hooked, which ends the game.
• A brief clip from this episode appears in a 2003 Burger King commercial promoting SpongeBob toys at the time.
• There is a SpongeBob song based on this episode called "Ridin' the Hook."

Jimmy Neutron turning SpongeBob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs into puppets

• While promoting Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, the title character of said movie appeared in the lower-right-hand corner on the day of its premiere, and using one of his inventions he temporarily transformed the cartoon into a puppet show during the scene where Mr. Krabs is making SpongeBob and Patrick recite an oath that he is giving.
• Mr. Krabs says that nobody has taken a break at the Krusty Krab since the "Chum Famine of '59," but SpongeBob had taken a break in "F.U.N.," and Squidward even went on vacation in "Squeaky Boots."
• This is the first episode to use the APM track "Dramatic Encounter."
• In the French version, this episode is called "La Pause," which translates to "Break." This translated title change refers to the part where Patrick says, "It's just taking a break."
• The music playing during one scene is actually from a short segment of Flubber.
• When SpongeBob fruit snacks were originally released, an advertisement for them featured the snacks acting out a part of this episode along with scenes from episodes of other Nicktoons.

Errors

Broken image

• Even though SpongeBob, when hooked by Squidward, is being dragged away from the Krusty Krab, Squidward is standing in the restaurant.
• During one scene, there is a plastic sheet, which lays on top of a celluloid frame, that appears to have some damage to it. Thus, the damage of the slightly damaged plastic part makes the scene look like there is a random see-through jellyfish on the screen.
• When Mr. Krabs says "Squidward," the latter moves his lips to what Mr. Krabs said.
• Squidward's fishing line is small in the end, and the end of the fishing pole is at the Krusty Krab. When SpongeBob is attached to it, the line is massively long, and the fishing pole ends to the top of the ocean.
• When SpongeBob's underwear is attached to the hook, they are hooked on the back and they tear off. But when Squidward is revealed to be the one using the fishing pole, SpongeBob's underwear is untorn and the hook is now hooked through the front.
• Mr. Krabs states that no one has taken a break at the Krusty Krab since the famine of '59, which can be assumed to be 1959. However, Mr. Krabs was born in 1942, which would mean he owned the Krusty Krab when he was at 16 or 17, which is not possible since he spent some time in the Navy and as a pirate before he opened up the Krusty Krab, not to mention he would not have been legally old enough to own a business at that time.Template:Debatable
