Synopsis[]

Hats Off to Space 014

Everyone's hats flying away.

One day at Kamp Koral, all the campers find their hats floating away. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy decide to get them back. Sandy puts a hat on her treedome and renovates it into a controllable vehicle, which is suddenly pulled upwards. SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy enter space, and find a hat floating. They chase it through a maze of space junk, but lose track of it. After traveling through a wormhole, they are out of gas. Patrick volunteers to find a gas station, and leaves the dome.

Hats Off to Space 104

Suddenly, an alien ship appears. It turns out to be from Nobby and Narlene, who are collecting space junk. When Sandy says that she is looking for hats, Narlene gets an idea and takes her ship to the moon. They crash land in front of an old, country house. It belongs to Narlene and Nobby's cousin Hatty McDoody, who has been stealing the hats to find one that fits his head. He opens up a silo full of hats, none of which he can wear. Sandy realizes that he is trying to wear the hats on top of his space helmet, and suggests that he take it off and put the hat directly on his head. Hatty successfully wears one, and goes off to impress his girlfriend, an alien "moon maid".

SpongeBob and Sandy return to camp, but the campers are hesitant to believe that an alien stole their hats. Narlene dumps the hats on the campers from her ship. SpongeBob and Sandy realize that they forgot Patrick, who crash lands and explodes, then takes out a full tank of gas.

Production notes[]

  • Supervising director Brandon Warren said that this is one of his favorite episodes from season 1.[6]
    • One of his favorite moments the season is "when Patrick floats off into space to look for gas for their spaceship that broke down, SpongeBob and Sandy continue with their space adventure and then at the end of the episode, they realize that they forgot Patrick!" He thought it was such a funny moment and he hoped others would enjoy too.[7]
  • When referring to the storyboarding process of the scene with Sandy racing through space, Warren said that "Tim Prendergast took the first swing at this episode and we were hard pressed to "plus" the episode because it was so solid. Erik Lechtenberg added some SpongeBob universe easter eggs and some finishing touches."[5]

Trivia[]

General[]

  • According to two of Brandon Warren's posts on Instagram and the United States Copyright Office, this episode was originally going to be called "Hat's Off to Space," with the only difference being that the apostrophe was removed from the finalized title.[5][6][8]
  • This episode originally came up short of the 11 minute runtime goal during the editing process, so Brandon Warren and his plussing team had to come up with content to fill time. Warren stated "We wanted to add a fun "anti-gravity" scene and came up with silly ways for SB to swim around and then developed the idea that Patrick would think he's drowning. The idea just snowballed from there. Then Zaven Leonetti put his magic touch on it and made it sing!"[4]
  • This episode marks the return of the music track "Me for You," which was not heard since "Gary's New Toy" from SpongeBob SquarePants.
    • This is the second widescreen episode to play "Me for You," with the first being "Gary's New Toy."

Episode references[]

Cultural references[]

  • This episode's title is a pun on the phrase "hats off to you."
  • When SpongeBob breaststroke swims through space, his movements are an homage to Wile E. Coyote's while he's flying with his "Bat-Man" suit through the air in the 1956 Looney Tunes cartoon, "Gee Whiz-z-z-z-z-z-z."[4]
    • Another Warner Bros. Cartoons nod can be found near the end of the episode: Before SpongeBob, Sandy and Narlene get back to Kamp Koral, SpongeBob says "hat's all, folks!" which is a reference to the phrase used to end most Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons ("That's all, Folks!")

Errors[]

  • It seems as if in at least the original workprint of this episode, Sandy's line "What's wrong with your hat, Patrick?" was cut off.[6]
