Synopsis[]
Squidward is sleeping, but is soon awakened by noise inside his house and goes downstairs to check. He soon finds SpongeBob inside his house, celebrating the anniversary of his friendship with Squidward. SpongeBob shows Squidward various memories he had with him, but Squidward angrily kicks him out afterwards.
After being jump scared by SpongeBob later in the day, Squidward tries to avoid him while walking through Bikini Bottom, but SpongeBob continuously manages to find him and tries to make new memories with him. Later, Squidward arrives at the Krusty Krab, where SpongeBob is at first nowhere to be seen, but soon shows up to surprise him, causing Squidward to run out of the restaurant, where he continues to see SpongeBob through hallucinations.
Later, at his house, Squidward is panicking about SpongeBob remembering everything about the two's interactions. He soon gets the idea to erase SpongeBob's memories of him. Squidward sneaks into SpongeBob's house to access the memory book to erase himself from SpongeBob's memories, as well as from his brain.
The following morning, Squidward checks through Bikini Bottom to see if SpongeBob is around, but he is not around. He sees SpongeBob at the Krusty Krab, where the two greet each other, although SpongeBob no longer knows Squidward. Mr. Krabs notices that Squidward is happy, and Squidward shares that he erased SpongeBob's memories of him. Outraged, Mr. Krabs tells Squidward that this is actually bad news, since SpongeBob had the combination to the safe with the Krabby Patty secret formula attached to a memory with Squidward as the only way to prevent Plankton from scanning Krabs' mind and stealing the secret recipe; when Squidward erased his memories of him, he erased his memory of the combination as well. As a result, Mr. Krabs forces SpongeBob and Squidward to spend time with each other to relive the two's interactions and get his memory back, so he remembers the combination.
Squidward takes SpongeBob around town to relive SpongeBob's former memories of him, but they all prove to be unsuccessful at first. Squidward's last resort to get SpongeBob to remember him is going on the Sushi-Maker, combined with some other memories, which ultimately causes SpongeBob to remember him, and the combination to the Krusty Krab safe as a result. SpongeBob shaking the ladder causes Squidward to go through the Sushi-Maker. At the Krusty Krab, where Squidward is shown injured, SpongeBob realizes he celebrated the "friendiversary" a day early and prepares the celebrations again, but is still unsure of when the exact day of the anniversary is.
Production[]
This episode was confirmed by Cartoonlounge.de on December 20, 2022.[3]
Promotional art[]
- Art made by Jeff Shea, saying that working on the show "was a blast," and thanked viewers for watching all of the series' newest episodes.[4]
Art[]
Background design[]
Storyboards[]
- Plussed by Kyle Morrison[7] and Jeff Shea,[2] with the odd-looking SpongeBobs from Squidward's paranoia sequence early in the episode being done by Ian Vazquez,[8] and the album pictures found in SpongeBob's "Squidward" memory book being drawn by Benji Williams.[9]
Production notes[]
Kyle Morrison:
- This was one of Morrison's favorite episodes to work on,[10] as they've said before that Squidward's their favorite character to draw and act out, so anytime they get to work on a Squid-heavy episode or scene, they're a "happy camper."[1]
- Morrison wishes they could take credit for all the bizarrely drawn SpongeBobs (such as the one on the blimp) found early in the episode that were done by Ian Vazquez, as they believe they add "so much to the great exchange over the rocket skates and Squidward's slowly mounting paranoia."[8]
- Squidward's nervous breakdown was one of Morrison's favorite sequences to plus on the show, saying that "From the creepy atmosphere and weather to the dramatic angles, the directing on this scene in particular was really stellar."[7]
- Supervising director Ian Vazquez stated in response that "If you ever wanted to see Squidward lose his entire mind, look no further than the work of Kyle Morrison. He's very good at that."[11]
- While plussing the sequence of Squidward erasing SpongeBob's memories and his line "There's just one more place where he keeps his memories," the one Morrison gave themselves a mood for was that "He was about to kill God."[9]
- Morrison subsequently stated that all off the album pictures were drawn by Benji Williams, and Morrison merely supplied "the erasure of precious memories!"[9]
- Supervising director Ian Vazquez stated in response "Kyle capturing the exact mood of a squid who is about to finally take his fate into his own hands after 25 years of torture by a nigh omnipotent cold and unfeeling puppet master for the entertainment of beings he cannot see."[12]
- The eel that reappears at the Krusty Krab seen after Squidward removes SpongeBob's memories always made Morrison smile when they show up.[13]
Jeff Shea:
- Shea said this was "such a fun episode," saying that "getting to figure out the magnifying glass effect was a blast, even if I pulled out 72.1% of my hair figuring it out."[2]
- Shea was extremely excited to do the "lime beans and car chase" scene, saying "When I say I was excited to get to do this part, I can't even articulate it within the twitter character limit, man."[14]
Sterling Richter:
- While designing Squidward's Kelpy G. magazine spread and running out of ideas of what to fill the crowd with, "[she] drew a moral eel version of myself & a lanternfish @gigaseraph in the crowd." The spread was later redrawn by Ian Vazquez, however, those two characters made it into the final - "it was such a pleasant surprise to see those two character designs making the cut."[5][15]

Release[]
- This episode is available on the SpongeBob SquarePants Vol. 23 digital collection and The Complete Thirteenth Season DVD.
Trivia[]
General[]
- This is the second episode for a few things:
- The second episode that revolves around a best friend celebrating with another best friend. The first was the season 4 episode "The Gift of Gum."
- The second episode celebrating a holiday around friendship, which follows "The Gift of Gum," that celebrated Best Friends Day.
- Coincidentally, two months and 24 days prior to this episode's release, an episode of Disney's Kiff was released under the same title.
- This episode was paired up with a rerun of "Sir Urchin and Snail Fail" during the original airing.[16]
- The title of this episode is a portmanteau of "friend" and "anniversary."
- The title card background for the episode is similar to those of the season 1 episode "Naughty Nautical Neighbors," the season 6 episode "Overbooked," the season 7 episode "Summer Job," the season 11 episode "Shopping List," and some of the time cards, only this one features slightly bigger pineapples and a cyan font.
- When after exploding into heart-shaped fireworks while recreating the rocket skates memory, Incidental 42 is shown proposing to Incidental 7.
- In the scene where Squidward was seen sitting in front of his fireplace traumatized, the back shadow of the chair he was sitting on briefly transforms into SpongeBob's shadow when the lighting strikes.
- According to a response to a comment by Kyle Morrison, a random car chase was already found in the script of the episode, but they suggested adding the lima beans reference from "Fools in April" to evoke the "lost memory" theme the episode was going for, eventually making its way into the final product.[17]
- When SpongeBob remembers Squidward, an oil-painted version of a model pose for Squidward appears.
- This model pose was previously used in the title card for "The Two Faces of Squidward" and the online game Talking Heads.
- SpongeBob breaks the fourth wall at the end, when he still thinks what day was his and Squidward's "Friendiversary" should take place, and looks at the viewers confused then shocked.
- This episode features a lot of episode references, with about 500, making it have the most out of any episode.
Episode references[]
- The tall room of Squidward's self portraits from "Squid's Visit" reappears.
- Squidward's fireplace room from "Snowball Effect" also reappears.
- Squidward's painting on the wall is one that SpongeBob makes in "Painting with Squidward."
- Several of Squidward's self-portraits use the same style as ones seen in "Are You Happy Now?," "Out of the Picture," "Stuck on the Roof," "Chatterbox Gary," "The Night Patty," "Pat Hearts Squid," and "Dream Hoppers."
- In the Squidward memory book, there are several references to past SpongeBob media.
- The first page uses the baby Squidward design from "Goo Goo Gas" and the baby SpongeBob design from various episodes.
- The second page is a reference to Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, showing a picture of SpongeBob and Squidward at Kamp Koral.
- This, along with the third page Patrick Star Show reference makes this the eleventh episode of the main SpongeBob SquarePants series to feature characters from a spin-off series.
- The third page has a reference to The Patrick Star Show, where it shows SpongeBob and Squidward's designs.
- The fourth page has a reference to the episode "Truth or Square," where it shows a picture of SpongeBob's house being sold, even having Squidward in the same hat from the scene and Incidental 49A in the background.
- On the fifth page are two concept designs from the SpongeBob SquarePants pitch bible.
- The sixth page has an image of SpongeBob standing in front of his Employee of the Month Awards on the Employee of the Month wall, referencing the episode "Employee of the Month."
- The eighth page—and, to a lesser extent, the memory book as a whole—is similar to the one shown at the beginning of "Breath of Fresh Squidward."
- It is also similar to a scene from "To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants."
- The "Wanted Maniac" posters from "Hall Monitor" return when Squidward is trying to get away from SpongeBob.
- Plush toys from "Skill Crane" appear inside the toy store window.
- A plush of Patrick wearing the Elastic Waistband costume from "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V" also appears.
- Squidward's Clarinet Informer magazine first appeared in "Abandon Twits."
- The magazine Squidward reads features a reference to "Smoothe Jazz at Bikini Bottom" where Squidward was in the audience watching Kelpy G but SpongeBob was there asking if he remembers it.
- The sea creature from "Your Shoe's Untied" and "The Patrick Show Sells Out" returns when SpongeBob and Squidward drive on the bridge.
- When Squidward is trying to restore SpongeBob's memories of him, the following episodes are referenced:
- "The Camping Episode" (where Squidward tries to attract a sea bear and gets attacked.)
- "Dying for Pie" (where SpongeBob shows Squidward to fish on Goo Lagoon wearing a salmon suit.)
- "Bubblestand" (where SpongeBob teaches Squidward the bubble-blowing technique.)
- "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost" (Squidward gets trapped in a bubble and lifted upwards)
- "Fools in April" (the "lima beans and a car chase" that SpongeBob mentioned is shown.)
- "Life Insurance" (the Sushi-Maker appears at the end of this episode, the entire sequence of Squidward getting hurt from that episode is also recreated.)
- "Hawaiian Misadventures B" plays in both episodes to match with the sequences.
- When SpongeBob finally remembers Squidward, frames from various episodes flicker through his eyes, specifically "Naughty Nautical Neighbors," "Pizza Delivery," "Nature Pants," "SB-129," "Bossy Boots," "Dying for Pie," "Christmas Who?," "Band Geeks," "Squid on Strike," "One Krabs Trash," "Ugh," "SpongeBob Meets the Strangler," "Funny Pants," "Dunces and Dragons," "Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy VI: The Motion Picture," "Breath of Fresh Squidward," "Pest of the West," "SpongeHenge," "Not Normal," "Truth or Square," "Keep Bikini Bottom Beautiful," "Enchanted Tiki Dreams," "Hello Bikini Bottom!," "Squid Defense," "Mind the Gap," "Bubble Bass's Tab," "The Jellyfish Kid," "Bummer Jobs," and "Painting with Squidward."
- Towards the end of the episode, an animated version of Roger can be seen. This animated version of Roger was originally going to be in the episode "New Student Starfish" at the ending but got replaced with a live-action chick instead.
- A duck family member from "Salty Sponge" returns in this episode.
- Squidward's wax sculpture from "Squidward the Unfriendly Ghost" is shown.
Errors[]
- When SpongeBob shows his memory book to Squidward, Squidward's neck appears to be disconnected from his body.
- In SpongeBob's Squidward memory book, the image from The Patrick Star Show shows him with blue pants. This is inaccurate, as he still wears brown pants on the show.
- When SpongeBob is going to his house, the house's interior is Squidward's house.
- When Squidward arrives at the Krusty Krab, its back door is missing, as well as the Chum Bucket.
- The path to Patrick's house appears and disappears throughout the episode.
- All of the episode images that SpongeBob uses in his eyes are all shown featuring him on the left, and Squidward on the right. However, an image from "Dying for Pie" only shows a tiny bit of Squidward on the right. Most of it was the brick wall built between him and SpongeBob.
