"Say Awww!" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season 13. In this episode, frustrated that he's seen as cute instead of evil, Plankton builds a robot to punish anyone who says 'aww!'.

The episode begins in the Krusty Krab as Plankton busts through the roof. Plankton threatens to take the customers' Krabby Patties, but he is interrupted by Incidental 82, who comments on Plankton being cute. The other customers go up to Plankton as he runs out of the restaurant in discomfort soon afterwards. At the Chum Bucket, Plankton complains to Karen about everyone finding him adorable when he wants to be seen as evil, which gives him the idea to build a robot, Q.T.-π, that will eat anyone who says "aww!" However, Plankton ends up being the first one eaten after groaning in response to being told to take out the trash.

SpongeBob heads to the Krusty Krab, with Q.T.-π following him. SpongeBob notices Q.T.-π, but he finishes his sentence as "cute little robot like you shouldn't be out here all alone!", so it does not eat him, and he takes it inside the restaurant, introducing it to the customers and Squidward. SpongeBob asks Squidward to watch over Q.T.-π. Squidward compliments Q.T.-π, saying it is cute. Other customers show up around Squidward, but he forces them away. Squidward and the customers say "aww!," resulting in Q.T.-π eating all of them. Mr. Krabs comes out of his office and gets eaten as well. SpongeBob comes out of the bathroom and notices that everyone is gone, thinking that the restaurant closed early.

Mr. Krabs notices that he and the Bikini Bottomites are all in a prison inside Q.T.-π. Plankton tries to dodge the blame, but Mr. Krabs immediately notices that he was at fault. Angered, Mr. Krabs asks Plankton how to get out of the robot, to which Plankton replies that they have to escape through the emergency evacuation uvula. The Bikini Bottomites form a pyramid in an attempt to get Plankton towards the uvula, but are unsuccessful.

SpongeBob takes Q.T.-π to the veterinarian. The veterinarian takes a look at Q.T.-π, hearing noise inside it. She asks Q.T.-π to say "aww!," resulting in it transforming and eating the veterinarian. Horrified, SpongeBob screams and runs away, with Q.T.-π following him while destroying Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob runs towards Glove World!, as Q.T.-π eats Incidental 41 at the entrance. SpongeBob continues running through Glove World! while Q.T.-π eats the visitors. SpongeBob finds what he thinks is an escape path, but it ends up being a "dead end" ride.

Q.T.-π corners SpongeBob, with everyone inside Q.T.-π urging it to eat him. SpongeBob tries to calm it down with music, but is unsuccessful and ends up getting eaten. He lands in the prison, thinking everyone is there for a surprise party, but Mr. Krabs explains to him that he can be used to help everyone reach the escape uvula. The Bikini Bottomites form a pyramid that SpongeBob climbs up towards the uvula. Plankton lifts up the pyramid, allowing SpongeBob to reach the uvula.

They all escape and land inside Glove World!. While everyone goes for the rides, SpongeBob comforts Q.T.-π, having been left alone. He gets the idea to use it for a ride, with its mechanism of eating people used for the entertainment. As everyone joyfully gets on line and enjoys the ride, Plankton is denied access due to being too short, as the episode ends.

This episode was confirmed by The Futon Critic on April 22, 2022.[8]

Ian Vazquez talked a bit about this episode's production process on its premiere day:

"Here the board supervisor starts after the writers and showrunners have really worked on it with the episode's board director (Dan Becker!), revisionist (Ray Morelli!) and editors to get what they want and do a full pass on it.

Then we get a list of their new ideas and fixes they want to see, then I'll add any my own ideas (all the creative directing stuff: new jokes, camera angles and more), work with the artists to punch up the acting, suggest their own ideas and clean it. So a part is a fun surprise!

This one was such a good clean board already and crazy idea it was just a matter of enhancing what was there, like designing an even wilder monster robot, making the scary shots scarier, planning the GIANT PYRAMID. It was all there already but it was fun bringing it out!"[9]

  • "This was such a fun episode that I worked on from start to finish. I basically handled managed this episode on my own along with the help of my amazing SB prod team. You may see some familiar characters from older episodes. Ian Vazquez killed it on this episode!!"[16]

  • Ian on the "Cameo Mountain" pyramid: "The episode called for Q-T-π to have eaten everyone in Glove World and then some so in order to reach that uvula...there had to be a lot of fish. So it ended up as Cameo Mountain."[13] Benji Williams would end up doing the final version of the pyramid; Ian said that "He really did a fantastic job on this and all of these giant crowd shots in the back half...so many fish. So...very many fish. And 6 mammals. And a turtle."[14]

  • "I worked on the two Chum Bucket scenes, cleaning and plussing Dan Becker's already excellent boards. Plankton's little heartfelt speech [after coming back into the Chum Bucket] was a bit of acting I really enjoyed fleshing out - and Karen cleaning up little angry Plankton still makes me laugh.[6]
  • "Plankton's evil monologue [while building Q-T-π] was largely roughed by Ian Vazquez - who else could come up with this stuff? But Plankton's walk around QT is something I'm really pleased with. Along with his little waddle before it - he's like a baby so excited to play with his new toy!"[17]

  • This is the first episode in which Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller are credited as executive producers rather than co-executive producers.

  • This episode holds the record for the most characters in a single shot, with 124 characters in the scene where everyone tries to escape from Q.T.-π.
  • This episode marks the first non-speaking appearance of many characters that were voiced by guest stars (Charlton Hawkfish is voiced by Jeff Bennett and Mutton Chop is voiced by Thomas F. Wilson).
    • This episode marks the first non-speaking appearance of Mama Bass.
  • This episode contains many reappearances of character who haven't appeared in at least 15 years.

Cultural references[]

  • The title is named after a phrase used by dentists to encourage their patients to open their mouths, or by doctors when using a tongue depressor on their patient.
  • Q.T.-π's name is pronounced the same way as "Cutie Pie," while being a pun on the aforementioned form of affectionate address.
  • Q.T.-π's voice has a similar inflection to Disney's Donald Duck and Quacker from Tom and Jerry while in its normal form.
    • Its normal form also has a slight resemblance to Quacker while its monster form has a slight resemblance to Donald Duck.
  • The Glove World redress for Incidental 182 was inspired by "those longtime Disney park employees that bring in that extra level of showmanship."[11]

Incidental 6 with bare feet.

  • Near the beginning of the episode, Incidental 6 can be seen with bare feet while he was shown to have his normal thin black feet in other scenes.
    • The same thing also happened to Incidental 3 later in the episode after Q.T.-π devours Squidward at the Krusty Krab.
  • After Q.T.-π devours Squidward, Incidental 87 can be seen wearing her glasses right before running away from the robot duck. However, she was seen without her glasses before Q.T.-π eats Squidward and the customers go "aww."

A second Incidental 102 can be seen next to Incidental 109 when Q.T.-π eats the roller coaster.

Incidental 111 is seen taking the place of the second Incidental 102 later on in the episode.

  • When Q.T.-π devours the roller coaster, a second Incidental 102 is seen on the very back car next to Incidental 109, but when everyone escapes from Q.T.-π, Incidental 111 is seen next to Incidental 109 instead of the second Incidental 102 from earlier.
  • Q.T.-π is programmed to eat anyone who says "Aww" to it, but when SpongeBob said "Aww" upon first seeing Q.T.-π, he does not get eaten.
  • When Q.T.-π heads towards the Krusty Krab, the Chum Bucket was not shown to be directly across from the Krusty Krab like it usually is.
  • When SpongeBob leaves the Krusty Krab with Q.T.-π, the Chum Bucket and the road leading to it are missing.
