Synopsis[]

One morning, Sandy is working on a new invention in her dome. SpongeBob and Patrick invite her to get lunch, which she declines. At the kitchen, Plankton is overwhelmed by the amount of customers. Mr. Krabs arrives, and calls out Plankton for serving breakfast rather than dinner. Plankton suggests that he needs more help, so Krabs calls for a volunteer to help in the kitchen. Everyone except SpongeBob leaves. Unimpressed, Plankton accepts SpongeBob as his assistant.

SpongeBob offers a "patty" to Mr. Krabs.

SpongeBob's first assignment is to boil a pot of water, which he cannot do successfully. He fails with other tasks, such as cutting bread and kneading dough, and Plankton is ready to fire him. However, when Plankton tastes a souffle SpongeBob made, he is impressed. SpongeBob cooks all night, setting out a giant feast for the campers in the morning. Krabs enjoys the meals himself until Plankton shows him how expensive they are. He emphasizes that SpongeBob should be cooking cheap food, leading SpongeBob to offer him a simple hamburger. Liking the taste, Krabs removes all the food from the menu in favor of "patties", which SpongeBob enthusiastically cooks for everyone. Observing how much everyone likes the food, Plankton tries a patty himself, and realizes that he can use the flavor to make money and take over the world.

The next day, Plankton spies on SpongeBob cooking the patties and asks him what the ingredients are. SpongeBob responds that he does not remember, so he wrote it down, creating the original version of the Krabby Patty formula. Plankton steals it and rides off on Karen. SpongeBob chases him through camp. Plankton nearly makes it out until he crashes into Sandy's foot, sending him flying and unable to catch the formula again. Sandy shows SpongeBob the invention she was working on: an automatic campfire. Plankton jumps into it and accidentally burns the recipe.

Sandy communicates with her future self.

With the formula destroyed, SpongeBob realizes that he will not be able to make any more patties, but says that he will cherish the memories he made. Plankton almost gives up on taking over the world with patties, until SpongeBob suggests that he use a different food, such as chum. Sandy takes her campfire back and sneaks into her dome, using an invention to call her future self. She explains that her plan worked, and that since Plankton did not get the formula, it can be safely rediscovered later. Future Sandy reveals that she sent her past self to camp in the first place, and bids farewell. In a preserved timeline, Sandy assures herself that everything will continue as normal: until she sees SpongeBob and Patrick using their butts to serve food.

Trivia[]

General[]

Kitchen Sponge 107
Kitchen Sponge 198
  • The ending of this episode features SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy as adults in the 2D animation style of the main series. Earlier in the episode, Plankton and an army of Krabby Patties also appear in 2D animation.
    • Plankton's army of Krabby Patties are similar to the ones from "Dream Hoppers."
    • Also, Plankton wears his king outfit from "King Plankton."
  • This episode technically marks the first involvement with Rough Draft Studios in Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, who provided the 2D animated sequences in Plankton's fantasy and the Krusty Krab scene at the end.
  • The title makes fun of the fact that SpongeBob more closely resembles a kitchen sponge, rather than a tube sponge. It also references the plot of the episode itself, as SpongeBob is literally a sponge working in the kitchen, thus, "kitchen sponge."
  • This episode is likely meant to fix the discontinuity of Sandy meeting SpongeBob in both The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run and "Tea at the Treedome," as Sandy speaking to her younger self indicates that Kamp Koral is not canon to the original show or she changed history so that she now knows SpongeBob and the other Bikini Bottomites since childhood.
    • Sandy sent her younger self to the underwater summer camp to stop Plankton from stealing the Krabby Patty secret formula, which explains how the story of her and SpongeBob meeting for the first time changed that they now know each other a lot sooner since childhood, instead of adulthood.
  • The items included on the Canteen's menu are
    • Coral Cheese Souffle (formerly)
    • Kelp and Sea lilly Pizza (formerly)
    • Sea turkey and Kelp Salad (formerly)
    • Seacow Steak (formerly)
    • Wurmwurst and Saucekelp (formerly)
    • Gourmet Kelpnut (formerly)
    • Patties (until the formula was destroyed)
    • However, that is not all of the food shown. There are also: Sausages, steaks, pizza, turkey, cheese, pancakes, cakes, waffles, ice cream, popcorn, vegetables (turnips and carrots only), water, and an unnamed drink.
  • This episode, along with its sister, are omitted from Nickelodeon Greece reruns.

Episode references[]

  • Plankton's kitchen being attacked by fish is a reference to "Help Wanted," when Krabs and Squidward are attacked by anchovies.

Errors[]

  • When SpongeBob says, "Thanks, Sandy! See you later!", his eyelashes are missing.
  • When Plankton yells at SpongeBob, SpongeBob's watch disappears for the scene.
  • While SpongeBob is squirting ketchup towards Patrick’s butt, but when he’s finished with it his legs are missing for one frame.
