SpongeCupEpisodePants is returning in 2024 for the 25th anniversary of SpongeBob SquarePants! Originally held in 2019 for the series' 20th anniversary, this is a World Cup-style event featuring community members' votes in a competition for the best SpongeBob SquarePants episode. Two full seasons and over 100 episode segments have aired since the previous tournament, so some of the newer episodes will be featured in this year's tournament, along with many returning favorites.
A total of 64 episodes will be included in this year's final tournament. The 32 episodes that made it to the group stage of the 2019 tournament will return, while the other 32 episodes will be decided by qualifier rounds. SpongeCup EpisodePants 2024 will start on May 1 (when "Help Wanted" premiered) and will end on July 17 (when season 1 officially premiered).
The details of the format for this year's tournament can be seen below. The episodes featured in this tournament are listed in full here, while the timeline for the tournament can be seen here.
Format
Qualifier rounds
Two qualifier rounds will be held to decide the remaining 32 episodes, with 16 qualifying from each round.
One of these rounds will include the episodes that were in the 2019 SpongeCup, but were eliminated in the review stage. The top half of the remaining episodes (33rd-80th; see here) are placed into 16 groups, three episodes in each group.
The other qualifier round features episodes from season 12 and newer. Every episode from season 12, season 13, and season 14 so far are placed into 16 groups, with seven episodes in each group.
From both qualifier rounds, the most voted episode of each group will feature in the 2024 SpongeCup. The voting will be held through Google Forms.
Group stage
The 64 episodes are split into 16 groups, four episodes in each group. Each episode in a group will compete against the other three once. A win is worth 3 points, a tie is worth 1 point, and a loss is worth 0 points. At the end of all the group games, the two episodes with the highest point totals from each group will advance to the elimination round.
Elimination round
32 episodes will advance out of the group stage. The elimination round consists of five stages: round of 32, round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final.
