Proposal

EmilyHReturns is proposing the following:

I know we've had this discussion a few times in the past and the community voted oppose each time, but since it's been quite a while since we last had this discussion, I might as well bring it up again: I think badges should be removed. All I see them doing is promoting competition and reminding you of how much life you don't have in the case of X Days Contributing badges. They are also used for blatant policy violations like edit farming, which happens all too often among inexperienced users. That's why I believe they should be disabled.  EmilyHReturns (MCBE)  14:11, June 25, 2020 (UTC)

Voting will conclude on July 10, 2020, at 2:19 PM EDT.  Anthony2306 (WCLE)  18:19, July 3, 2020 (UTC)

  • Oppose Oppose - Per my concern: Is promoting competition necessarily a bad thing? There are rules to prevent edit farming, and any small amount of competition may encourage users to go out and make productive edits if they wouldn't otherwise. Also, while it is an accepted truth that this wiki's active users definitely do not have a life, if you don't want to be reminded of that then just don't look at the leaderboard. --The gamer 987654321 (talk) 18:57, July 3, 2020 (UTC)
  • Reply button Reply - It is a bad thing if a user wants to use it to their advantage and put themselves over other, less-ranked users while bragging in the process. Also, even if there are rules to counteract edit farming, they aren't effective at all to the user's leaderboard rank as edit-farming is not an offence that warrants an infinite ban unless done persistently after several warnings (which rarely happens, but still), so a user who made a ton of milking edits while the admins were away and got really high up on the leaderboard as a result would still retain their position because they were only given a warning once the admins caught onto it (and if they were blocked, once they get unblocked, they'll return to their position on the board).  EmilyHReturns (MCBE)  19:13, July 3, 2020 (UTC)
  • Reply button Reply - This wiki exists to build content. It is not all about users having ranks over other users, and whether or not they are fair. Constructive additions that are farmed for edits are better suited to achieving that job than no edits at all. If it acts as a motivator for users to make edits that they otherwise would not, then it is doing what it should. I have also never come across a user openly "bragging" about their position on the leaderboard. --The gamer 987654321 (talk) 19:28, July 3, 2020 (UTC)
  • Neutral Neutral - The custom badges are unneeded but the default ones can stay.  9/17 (WCE) Krusty Love 091 19:10, July 3, 2020 (UTC)
  • Reply button Reply - I already specified my reasons in the proposal.  EmilyHReturns (MCBE)  19:28, July 3, 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose Oppose - Although I'm strongly supportive of quality edits, do you have concrete evidence correlating this with edit farming? Unless it's a major or frequent issue, this isn't needed, similar to my thoughts on the proposal removing comments altogether.

  • Oppose Oppose - < Well I personally would just remove lots of badges but still keep the system like for example editing for x days straight, we don't need that and it should be removed, as a former edit farmer I understand where you are going with the edit farming thing but there already is a punishment system for it and plus edit farming isn't really that bad as the other rules and shouldn't be more strictly enforced, I understand your side too but I personally think that removing badges is a bit too far -ChipFan111 >

  • Oppose Oppose - I definitely understand the reasoning to remove badges, but I think they do more good than harm. They've certainly pushed me to be more active and make more contributions in the past. It's easy to abuse them but we can always warn anyone who does so.  Figmeister (WCE)  04:54, July 4, 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose Oppose - CaillouFan (talk) - I love the TV show Caillou. 15:13, July 4, 2020 (UTC)

  • Oppose Oppose - Frankly in some things you are right Emily, because for example the X Days Contributing badge, those badges really stress you bacause there will be times when you will not be able to contribute and you lose the day and that prize starts from 0, I mean, there is life outside the wiki. But I oppose, I agree with the comment of Italian. { KuKiPineappleInk - 23:56, July 4, 2020 (UTC) }

  • Comment new Comment - < So I'm not the only one who hates the x days straight thing cuz stress and the fact that we all have a life, nice -ChipFan111 >
    • Comment new Comment - LOL, there are like 2 people on this proposal who are trying to claim that the wiki editors don't have a life. That both is and isn't true. I know that I've never had a job and I've never worked a day in my life. But the person who wrote this proposal, EmilyHReturns, claims she works at Taco Bell and also a babysitter. - Jensonk
  • Comment new Comment - < Jensonk, I can't reply on proposals cuz I just can't do it as the system is so complexed so just consider this as a reply, you know same I also never worked anywhere but anyways what I meant is that we all have lives and most of us don't have time to edit 18764827473 days in a row -ChipFan111 >
  • Comment new Comment - < Jensonk, consider this another reply as I accidentally left something out, what I meant by a life is not just work, I'm talking about anything other than ESB like for example being lazy and going around on my computer and phone as that's what I do everyday as I meant anything other than ESB so anyways I'm just typing this to clarify something -ChipFan111 >
