Proposal

AlternativeHuman93 is proposing the following:

It's a really stupid thing to be banned, and many users have complained about the rule and how strictly it is enforced. At this point it's just a nuisance and many people would like them to be allowed, not just myself.

The voting stage will conclude on January 11, 2020, at 8:00 AM CST. TheKorraFanatic (Talk Page) (Contributions) (Guestbook) 14:24, January 4, 2020 (UTC)

  • Support Support - It’s time for ESB to lessen its restrictions at least somehow.  DanzxvFan8275 (MCUE)DanPic  14:35, January 4, 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose Strong Oppose - This proposal was made because people got annoyed that they were warned for breaking the rules. swear acronyms have been banned on ESB for years now and it's never been an issue. In addition, ESB is a wiki about SpongeBob, a cartoon aimed towards kids, and cultivating a more toxic community with this proposal isn't going to help our audience. Furthermore, if this is passed, people will start pushing for actual cursing to be allowed, which is even worse for the wiki. The most expensive boss, Alex.sapre (talk) 14:52, January 4, 2020 (UTC)

  • Support Support - to be able to know what the acronym means you would have to have learned the swears somewhere else anyway, so i don't really see much of a problem here.  SpongeBot678 (MCE)  15:45, January 4, 2020 (UTC)

  • Support Support - While I'd never support full on swearing on this wiki, I feel acronyms are fine. They don't actually contain swears, just a letter that stands for a swear, which some may not even get anyway. Plus from a moderators standpoint, i'm not even always 100% sure if a swear is contained in some acronyms or not (new ones pop up all the time). This will just make it much easier to focus on the actual swears with acronyms out of mind. ChickenkrispiesW C E Triforce  16:13, January 4, 2020 (UTC)

  • Oppose Oppose - Per Alex. This proposal doesn't have enough detail to be implemented as policy anyway. If this proposal passes, it opens a can of worms which will be hard to close again. --Spongebob456 talk 17:04, January 4, 2020 (UTC)

  • Support Extremely Strong Support - Sure, I wouldn't mind this. It should be allowed on this wiki as this has been done on various other cartoon wikis. There is no reason to ban people over this. As such, I support this. - JoJoMKWUTeam (talk) 19:47, January 4, 2020 (UTC)

  • Support Support - I feel like there's a way to compromise on this. If it does pass, we can be able to say the acronyms in chat, but nowhere else on the site (because 12 year olds and younger could be browsing). And if people take advantage of the acronyms (because I know there will be tons who will abuse the power), they could get a warning. Plus, this wiki is for 13 year olds and up, so it shouldn't be a problem if we say the acronym in the chat in front of someone younger, because they shouldn't be there in the first place.  Mavnol333 (WCLE)
    • Reply button Reply - 12 year olds can handle moderate swearing, such as acronyms, it's mostly 11 and under you should worry about. - <insert name here>, is that you? Mind Luxor (talk) 04:24, January 5, 2020 (UTC)

    • Reply button Reply - Ok, this wiki is centered around 10-12 year olds, around the "age range" of Spongebob, kids who already know the meaning of all these acronyms. - <insert name here>, is that you? Mind Luxor (talk) 21:40, January 6, 2020 (UTC)
  • Support Extremely Strong Support - Yes, I've been waiting a fricking long time for a proposal like this to happen. - Jensonk
  • Oppose Oppose - This undermines ESB's appropriateness and appeal to younger audiences. I'm also well aware of the risk associated with the acceptance of profane acronyms in any given community, and it's best to prevent disruptive toxicity and poisonous language / intentions from getting in the way of a happy atmosphere. It's best for keep the status quo for the good of the wiki, and the community. Golfpecks2 (Contact • Contrib) 04:32, January 5, 2020 (UTC)
    • Comment new Comment - This wiki is part of FANDOM which is 13+. I think it doesn’t really matter at this point. The wiki’s strict limits make this wiki unbearable. - JoJoMKWUTeam (talk) 22:06, January 5, 2020 (UTC)

    • Comment new Comment - I don’t think it matters because kids shouldn’t go and make an account on FANDOM. Point being, the internet is the internet. I think the internet isn’t really meant for young kids. - JoJoMKWUTeam (talk) 22:06, January 5, 2020 (UTC)
  • Support Extremely Strong Support - As a chat moderator, you'd expect me to oppose this on account of it being "inappropriate", however I couldn't help but bring myself to support as I have been waiting a long time for ESB to loosen its restrictions at least somehow. I support this proposal because: 1.) It's not like we're actually saying the swear words; they are just spelled out in acronym form, so as long as we do not spell them out I see nothing inappropriate about it. 2.) Let's be honest, how many of us learned profanity when we were little? I know for a fact that I did. I may not have been allowed to use it, but I learned about it nonetheless and got exposed to it by hearing my parents and friends swear. 3.) As long as they are not directed toward anyone (e.g. telling someone to "gt*o"), I also don't see anything offensive about them. 4.) Even though SpongeBob SquarePants is a children's television series, FANDOM requires that its users be 13+ or else they aren't allowed to have an account. You have to have an account to enter chat and you have to be at least 13 years old to have an account, so maybe this rule should only be allowed in chat. 5.) If this proposal passing causes complaints from parents, I would blame it on them for not monitoring what websites their children want to go on prior to letting them; yes this is a SPONGEBOB wiki but you never know what less-than-appropriate content pops up on innocent-seeming sites. 6.) Most kids can handle profanity even before 13 years old. Most of the "kids" who go on this site are teenagers or pre-teens; I doubt a little kid is going to be able to properly read a lot of the content on this wiki and understand it properly if it's not at a grade-school level in terms of vocabulary. In fact, I doubt most parents would let their kids go online if they're under the age of 9 or 10, even if it's a kid-friendly website. I doubt most kids would be able to use technology properly before those ages without causing trouble and misusing it.  EmilyHReturns (MCBE)  22:11, January 5, 2020 (UTC)
    • Reply button Reply - You are a nice person, Emily, but #6 is the dumbest idea I've ever heard of. One in 900,000 (if not more) kids today have not gone online before age 9-10. When I was that age internet wasn't as big as it is today, of course, but I got my first use in 1997, when I was just 5. Nowadays, some 8/7 year olds are making roblox accounts, 5/4 year olds going onto Sprout, and, since spongebob was made to attract preadolescent kids (my opinion, not exactly yours) 9/10 is probably the age range of viewers on this wiki. - <insert name here>, is that you? Mind Luxor (talk) 22:20, January 5, 2020 (UTC)
    • Reply button Reply - Fair, Mind. But to be honest, I don't think many 9 to 10 year olds would wanna be on this site to begin with.  Mavnol333 (WCLE)
  • Comment new Comment - I always found the acronym rule to be pretty dumb anyways. It's not even like we're full-on swearing. Plus, this wiki is meant for people who can HANDLE these words, which is why users under 13 aren't allowed, it'snot like we have 9 year olds roaming this wiki. I'm sorry but this seems like a pretty dumb rule to me. ESB needs to be less strict with its rules.  Louis219 (WCE)  00:13, January 6, 2020 (UTC)
    • Reply button Reply - Plus, users who admit to being under the age of 13 are known for being disabled by Fandom. Me myself, I'm well over the age of 13 (incase the 6 years I've spent on this wiki doesn't already give you that indication). - Jensonk
  • Support Support - I think this could at least work for sometime before acronyms become abused. - Jfro8461

*Support Extremely Weak Support -*Oppose Oppose - While I do still think that is still too much for kids usually acronyms don't mean anything bad and is usually censoring out the words. UPDATE: I changed my vote to Oppose Since kids are still coming and they still don't need to say words like that even though they can't make an account until they are 13 but this is a children's wiki. Spongefan14 (talk)

  • Support Support - I am not really the best person to ask here, since I don't really swear at all (I never even use acronyms), but I feel like this would be a good way for the wiki to lessen its restrictions, as people already said it before me. I mean, it's not like people would actually swear in these situations, so I feel like outright banning people due to this is not a good thing for anyone. Plus, most people dhouldn't even have an account here under the age of 13, and I feel like underage users joining has become a bigger problem for the wiki than just using acronyms like these.  Doctor Patrick (M·C·EThe Goofy Newbie 148   16:30, January 8, 2020 (UTC)
  • Comment new Comment - Just wanted to add something out there. Do you know how many kids will be creeping around reading the forums? Not much. And the ones that do, quickly lie about their age and get an account- if they can handle the forums. Ok, so the younger ones probably find things like this all the time, on other websites, so seeing it on this website won't affect them (as long as it's not an actual bad word) and there will be no need to get in trouble, because there will be no need to tell a parent. I started swearing when I was about 11, and my mom said "it's just part of his age" (back in 2003, that is.)

Here's the thing: The SBSP Community Forum Website has absolutely NO Profanity rules (for the most part) and is it thriving still? Yes.
