Proposal

Squidward9tv is proposing the following:

Hello all. Many wikis specify that fan-edited scenes cannot be used on articles.

Examples are MLP Wiki's guidelines: "Images should remain unedited with the exception of cropping and mild color-correction when necessary."

and Steven Universe Wiki's policy: "Any photos not canonical...such as fan-art and edited files do not belong on articles. They should either be posted on a blog, user page, board thread, or talk page."

I'm proposing here that we add the same rule. Some pages use poor-quality fan edited scenes that make the wiki look rather unprofessional and silly. See pages like Big nose fish, Monroe Timmy, and What Zit Tooya where just using the official scenes would improve the pages. Using fan edits does not improve the page quality and can only hurt it, so we should use a rule just like the ones I listed above. The wording I'm proposing is: "Any unofficial images, such as fan art and edited files, cannot be used on articles. They can only be posted on blogs, user pages, board threads, or message walls."

  • Oppose Oppose - On the character pages, having those images of a character photoshopped out of a scene are helpful since we came only to see the character and not the background. Especially when some of those images were taken straight from actual episodes. Also, keep in mind that not all characters have official stock art images. - Jensonk
  • Neutral Neutral more towards oppose - Gonna just kinda copy-paste my point from the initial proposal, as it states my full thoughts on it.
The edited files, if they are useful to the article (for example, the one on the Kenny the Cat page,) should be allowed, but if it doesn't make sense, they shouldn't. There is fan-art images in some of the main characters' galleries and I 100% agree that they shouldn't be allowed on main pages.
If "fan-art" also pertains to cropped images, I'm a bit iffy on that. If the cropping isn't really good at all (like the ones listed), I don't think it should be allowed, but some of the cropped images (take the Old Man Jenkins images for example) are really well done, and I think if they are nicely done they should be allowed on main articles. --SpungiBub signature 23:05, April 29, 2019 (UTC)
  • Support Support - Jensonk doesn't understand the proposal. I read it, and this is to stop all fan-made images which I agree with. Fan-made images are never better than just using the scene where the thing appears, which can be cropped to focus on it but not photoshopped out of the background. --Apalforsb (talk) 23:46, April 29, 2019 (UTC)
    • Comment new Comment - But is the background really necessary when I'm trying to see the character only? - Jensonk
      • Comment new Comment - Backgrounds give helpful context to the reader if they don’t remember what episode the image is from. And they look tons better than the photoshopped/fan-submitted scenes from any of the non-HD episodes (seasons 1-8) and a lot of the HD episodes too. So they're pretty much guarantees for image quality. Apalforsb (talk) 00:32, April 30, 2019 (UTC)
        • Comment new Comment - But the wording on character pages usually already inform the reader about what episode(s) a certain character appeared in. - Jensonk
          • Comment new Comment - It reminds readers of the specific scene/location where the character appeared in the episode. And still, it's no reason to prefer "fan-edited" unofficial stuff that is worse quality. Apalforsb (talk) 00:41, April 30, 2019 (UTC)
  • Support Support - Surprised we didn't have a rule against all unofficial images already. Fan der G. (talk) 01:39, April 30, 2019 (UTC)
  • Support Weak Support - Jensonk does make a valid point, however I do feel that fan art has no place being on articles. I think it's a bit of a gray area when it comes to alterations on official images. I'd say it should be left to the admins and assistants to judge as to whether it enhances or detracts from the article. ChickenkrispiesW C E Triforce  01:57, April 30, 2019 (UTC)
  • Support Strong Support - The other cartoon wikis have these rules against any and all fan-altered or fan-art images. They make perfect sense. Squidbobfever (talk) 03:34, April 30, 2019 (UTC)
