Proposal
It seems very unusual that some new achievements on different categories have been added without permission, proposals, or an announcement on the old forums. Discussions are a question mark as I can’t see a search function at the page. To be honest, I do remember a proposal being created to put in new achievements, but I couldn’t find one through the "ESB" page type in the advance search.
One way or another, achievements are poorly managed and probably in their current state not take not seriously by the community.
While others are considering to remove certain achievements[1], we should remove the ability to add more achievements at all. This includes proposals and adding by admins. Here are three my points.
1. Adding more achievements devalues achievements. Adding more achievements, especially into dumb categories devalues them. For one, inflation of ways to get achievement points should logically devalue them. Second, having them in relatively unimportant categories like Category:Jellyfish, Category:Pets, and Category:Groups[2] make it look like achievements just aren't being taken even somewhat seriously.
2. This should encourage the removal of more categories.
The fact that admins can't add more achievements will hopefully make them reconsider the ones they already have.
3. We already have all the achievement categories we should need. There are probably enough achievements categories to most users here. To list them off, excluding 6:
- Episodes
- Episode Transcripts
- Characters
- Main Characters
- Food
- DVDs
- Video Games
- Associated Production Music
- Books
- Toys
- Shorts
- Intentional SpongeBob SquarePants
- Songs
- Objects
- Events
