Proposal

The comments being disabled appears to be a polarising issue for many people, however I believe that some sort of compromise can definitely be reached. As such, I am presenting multiple options. Whichever option gets the most support in the voting stage will be the option that gets implemented. You can support, oppose, or be neutral on any number of the options (or simply not vote on them). If options C and D both get over 70% support, then they will both be implemented (this cannot happen with the others as they contradict each other). If no option receives the required 70% support, then the status quo will remain, pending further discussion. The four options are:
  • Option A - keep article comments disabled and do nothing else. This would keep it exactly the same as it is now.
  • Option B - keep article comments disabled and implement clearer rules for talk pages, which would be implemented into the policy (I have created some draft rules below, which would be put into the “interaction” part of the policy). These are your general rules on talk page etiquette, such as using headers, signing your posts, and only using them to discuss the article.
  • Option C - re-enable comments, while having them disabled on specific pages. Apparently this can be done with a bit of CSS (thread), and would apply to pages such as those for unaired episodes, List of season 12 episodes, List of season 13 episodes, List of episodes and Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years. That list is neither indicative nor exhaustive, and it would not necessarily have to be forever, especially in the case of pages for unaired episodes.
  • Option D - re-enable comments, while putting in place strictly enforced rules about what sorts of comments are allowed (again, some draft rules are below). These would weed out low-effort spam comments, such as the infamous "real title card" "jokes," allowing for productive and interesting discussion about the article or its subject in the comments. This would largely have to be enforced by administrators and discussion moderators manually, although it is possible that common keywords for spam could be put in the abuse filter.

Option B - Talk pages policy

The talk pages policy details how talk pages are to be used on Encyclopedia SpongeBobia. These are important so that all users can effectively discuss improvements to articles with each other.

Talk pages policy

  • Talk pages are for discussing the article itself, not the subject of the article. Discussion about the subject of the articles should go on discussions, the forum, the chat room or Discord server. Content on talk pages that is not to do with the article will be removed.
  • When posting on talk pages, it is required to leave your username, so that everyone knows who posted what. It is strongly recommended to use a signature to do this. It is a requirement to post your username, and strongly recommended to use a timestamp. A post left without a signature will have the {{Unsigned}} template placed after the post.
  • You must use headers when posting on talk pages. This helps to prevent different conversations getting mixed up. Any post that does not use headers will be removed.

These would be your standard policy violations. As this is to do with interaction, both administrators and discussion moderators would be able to warn for violations relating to this.

Option C - Proposed list of pages without comments

For now, I am only saying that 18 of this wiki’s 14,211 pages should not have comments, and that the rest should.

Option D - Comments policy

The comments policy details how comments are to be used. These are important so that all users can use them effectively, without having to see too much unwanted content.

Comments policy

The following types of comments are banned in all circumstances, and will be deleted on sight:

  • "Real title card" comments that consist of a random image that would in no way resemble a true title card. Fan-made title cards with effort put into them are permitted.
  • Single word comments which do not provide anything new to the conversation. These include, but are not limited to, "bruh" and "e."
  • "Happy / unhappy birthday" messages to episodes, or any variant of these messages.

Administrators and discussion moderators reserve the right to delete any comments they see necessary.

These would be your standard policy violations. As this is to do with interaction, both administrators and discussion moderators would be able to warn for violations relating to this.

Voting

Option A

  • Support Weak Support - I weakly support this, although I definitely do think that there should be some procedure for talk page misuse. --The gamer 987654321 (talk) 09:31, August 4, 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose Oppose Egor Vasylets M·C·U·B·E·L·A10:44, August 4, 2020 (UTC)

  • Neutral Neutral -  BSpongeSM02 (WCELA)   13:16, August 4, 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose Oppose -  RAAL La Louvière - Logo B&W Sharko (WCE)  17:11, August 4, 2020 (UTC)

Option B

  • Support Strong Support - This is my preferred option. We need a good procedure for talk page use and misuse, and this should deliver exactly that. It would make sure that there is no place for the type of comments that people hated. --The gamer 987654321 (talk) 09:31, August 4, 2020 (UTC)
  • Oppose Very Strong Oppose - What's unclear in the sentence - Talk Pages are Lame.  Egor Vasylets M·C·U·B·E·L·A10:44, August 4, 2020 (UTC)

Option C

  • Oppose Oppose - I doubt that this would work. Firstly, who decides which pages should not have comments, and when? Would the administrators just be able to completely override wider consensus by disabling comments. Even still, I believe that blanket measures on certain pages will not stop them altogether, and could just lead to more tension when they are disabled on particularly popular pages. Also, according to the thread that I linked, this does not work particularly well on mobile. It still prevents them from adding comments, but the format on mobile suggests that you can, which could cause confusion. Considering that a significant number of this site's readers are on mobile, this could be a problem. Overall, I do not think that this is the way. --The gamer 987654321 (talk) 09:31, August 4, 2020 (UTC)

  • Support Weak Support - If it is indeed possible to disable comments on specific pages, I would be okay with it, but I prefer Option D much more. Lumoshi (tc) 17:10, August 4, 2020 (UTC)

Option D

  • Neutral Neutral - Oppose Oppose - I am not sure about this. It would mainly depend on how strictly, and with what what capacity, the administrators and discussion moderators enforce this. If this cannot be fully enforced, then it will likely just revert back to how it was earlier. However, if it can be enforced properly, then it should work well. However, I do not have confidence that it would be fully enforced to the extent that it would have to be indefinitely, and as such I am opposing. --The gamer 987654321 (talk) 09:31, August 4, 2020 (UTC) (Vote changed and some more reasoning added at 13:05, August 4, 2020 (UTC))
