The blocking policy applies to all users on the wiki, including ESB crew members.
Blocking should be a last resort on any Fandom community, and talking through misbehavior with a user is always a priority. If, however, that can't be done and the block needs to be placed, the following guidelines should be applied.
Blocking policy
If a user is violating any rule, administrators must resolve the problem and politely notify the user of their wrongdoing by giving one warning on their message wall.
If a user breaks two different rules, that counts as one warning for each rule. A user that breaks the same rule twice will receive a block.
If a warned user continues to break the same rule within twenty-four hours without acknowledging the warning, an administrator will contact that user again by replying to the original warning message.
If the warned user continues to break the same rule after twenty-four (24) or more hours have passed since the original warning thread was posted, or any period of time after the user has acknowledged a message on their message wall, the user will be blocked for a maximum of fourteen (14) days.
Any user who continues to violate the rule for which they were blocked after their initial block ends will receive another block of greater duration, with the extent of the increase in block length depending on the rule(s) violated and the severity of the offense at the discretion of the administration. Users who continue to break a rule they were blocked for previously will not receive further warnings before another block is imposed.
Exceptions
Any user who commits offenses that are very serious to the point at which they harm the wiki or threaten a user may be blocked immediately for any amount of time at the discretion of the blocking administrator.
Any user who spams, vandalizes, harasses, or threatens a user or the wiki as a whole as their first contribution or interaction will be blocked immediately without warning, for a duration of two (2) weeks. If they continue to violate such rules after their block, they shall be given an infinite block.
Users that misuse spelling and/or grammar, unintentionally use improper formatting, and/or make an accidental edit shall not be blocked.
Blocking the user
When an administrator blocks a user, they must inform the user that they have been blocked via a message on their message wall. This allows the blocked user to know that they have been blocked and the reason, so that they can be linked to the policies to better understand our rules, as well as learn how to appeal a block.
Administrators must leave the user's message wall open so that the user can informally enquire about the block, should they so wish. If a blocked user abuses their wall privileges by spamming, threatening, or harassing other users, they will have their message wall privileges removed until the end of their block.
A bureaucrat may unblock the user if they deem it an unfair block. If any other bureaucrat is in disagreement, the bureaucrat disputing the block must start a block review.
Block disputes
Any user may appeal against their block or another user's block they deem unfair, to have the block removed. Initially, blocking disputes should be handled between the conflicting parties in an informal discussion. If the conflicting parties resolve the dispute, the dispute is over. If neither party agrees to a compromise, any user opposing the block must start a block review and follow the procedures outlined below.
If the time between when the block was applied and the block's expiry date is less than 1 month, only an internal review of the block within the administration can be conducted. A blocked user to whom that applies must first contact an ESB administrator on Community Central. The administration will conduct a vote over whether to overturn the block, with a majority of the participating administrators voting to overturn the block being required for it to be overturned. The record of the result of the vote must then be recorded in a table at ESB:Block reviews, with the numbered tally of the vote and a link to the blocked user's request for a review. If the block is not overturned, the blocked user cannot request another block review for two months.
If the time between when the block was applied and the block's expiry date is 1 month or longer, a formal block review involving a community vote must be created at ESB:Block reviews. These discussions last 7 days, and a minimum of 70% opposition to the block is required for the block to be overturned, not including neutrals. If the appeal fails, the block is not repealed. After one failed appeal, the blocked user must wait two months before creating another appeal. Any subsequent appeals after the second failed appeal cannot be created until six months after the creation of the previous appeal.
