"Chum Bucket List" is a The Patrick Star Show episode from season 2. In this episode, SpongeBob helps Patrick fulfill his bucket list.

Characters[]

Synopsis[]

The episode opens with a sitcom-style intro for The Patrick Show. After, SpongeBob and Patrick walk downtown, questioning what to do for the day. SpongeBob suggests they cheer up a senior and comes to Shady Shoals Rest Home with a bouquet and letter. Patrick promptly throws them in the garbage and leaves to find something to eat, disappointing the old man. After looking around, SpongeBob suggests the Krusty Krab. Patrick's view is blocked by a kid with a balloon, so he decides to visit the Chum Bucket instead.

Patrick orders and devours a giant amount of chum. Afterwards, he notices that Plankton forgot his second order of chum fries, and rampages around the restaurant. SpongeBob suggests they check the kitchen, but they see Plankton pouring a poisonous substance into a batch of chum, with dead bodies around it. They leave in horror, only for it to be revealed that Plankton is using cleaning solution to unclog a sink, and the fish are actually mannequins that Karen owns.

Chum Bucket List 077

Patrick's bucket list.

Mistakenly believing that Patrick has eaten poisoned chum, SpongeBob wants to take him to the doctor. That turns out to be the last item on Patrick's bucket list, and he has a list of things he dreamed about doing first. After checking off the first four items, which he had accomplished earlier in the day, he goes with SpongeBob to fight a robot. Sandy's robot effortlessly beats Patrick. He spits out his bucket, and after deliriously completing his "struggle to make sense" task, moves onto the next one: scaling the tallest building in Bikini Bottom.

SpongeBob climbs the building with plungers as Patrick gets dragged behind. When Patrick stops in the building to buy one of Plankton's chum dogs, the rope stretches and sends Patrick smashing into SpongeBob, landing them both on top of the building. SpongeBob plants the flag, only for Patrick to notice a slightly taller building next to them. SpongeBob screams in exasperation, the sheer volume pushing the building into the neighboring Seaweed City.

Chum Bucket List 169

Patrick tells his audience that he is nearing death.

Patrick accomplishes his next few tasks: winning a gold medal by stealing one from an awards ceremony, singing on Broadway and getting squashed in the process, seeing a sunset by watching a billboard in front of a toxic waste dump, and skydiving. After they survive, Patrick's last goal before the doctor is to give the performance of a lifetime on his show. He sets up a giant obstacle course and rides it down. Afterwards, Patrick dramatically shares the news to the audience that he is about to die.

Squidina suddenly notices that Patrick has something stuck in his teeth. She picks it out, and it turns out to be the entirety of the chum he ate earlier that day, which splatters all over town. While enthusiastic at the news, Patrick suddenly realizes he is hungry and eats another bucket of chum, poisoning him. SpongeBob takes him to the doctor, where it is revealed that while the Plankton did not poison the chum, it contains dangerous bacteria anyways. Patrick has a cone put over his head to prevent him from eating more chum.

SpongeBob thanks the doctor, but sees that Patrick has disappeared. He runs off to the Chum Bucket, ordering Plankton to fill his cone with chum, to which Plankton complies. SpongeBob takes out his own bucket list, the only item on it being to save Patrick's life.

Production notes[]

Eliza Herndon:

  • Herndon said that this episode's opening sequence was "EASILY one of [their] favorite things [they've] ever done for the franchise!!!"[2]
    • Herndon said that the sequence was "such a special assignment," being directly "timed out to the audio." "I worked off of [Tim Prendergast's] thumbnails who built it completely up from scratch (some of his revisions are [still in the storyboards] with the ice cream truck mess/explosion scene)." She called it a "great experience."[9]
    • Herndon said she loved "over the top cheesiness like [the World of Friendship song] (and love old sitcom pastiches even moreso)."[3]
    • More explanation on Prendergast's revising: "Tim Prendergast thumbed out the section from scratch (and did some revisions, such as the ice cream mess and the .....ship explosion) and is a HUGE reason as to why this moves as great as it does! So many episodes on this show have been a formative experience, but this one especially really got me to think about how the drawings will translate into motion!"[3]
  • Herndon said she was "SO happy to see all of the positive buzz this has generated!! As always, the entire team put their all into this episode and, as always, it really shows!"[3]
  • Herndon said that this episode was "really formative in my skill as an artist--learning about effects animation, arcs and movement-- and [she got to work] so intimately with favorite characters like Plankton and SpongeBob."[4] She said they were "characters [she doesn't] get to fraternize as much with on The Patrick Star Show, so that made this episode all the more special! Especially getting to lean into Plankton's theatrics."[10]
  • "[The] shot [of Plankton "poisoning" the chum was one] I still regularly think of and piggyback off of, because it was REALLY formative in getting me to think of how these characters and props move in animation! This was really an "AHA" moment and got me thinking about arcs, which is something always on my mind now."[11]
  • "There have been a lot of episodes I've worked on where I've said "I have no idea how we're getting away with this"—an implied pile of corpses framing Plankton as he seemingly poisons the chum is definitely at the top of that list HAHA. But I'm so glad we did it!"[12]
  • "I love working on scenes that are a little more reliant on getting into the psychology of the characters, so it was nice to balance out the dramatics and crazy opening with [SpongeBob and Patrick's conversation after leaving the Chum Bucket]! I enjoyed leaning into Pat's lackadaisical smarm and well meaning ignorance."[13]
  • "Playing off Pat's final monologue with the emotionality and sincerity it needed was a fun challenge! We don't often get moments like this, especially in association with a character like Patrick who has more heart than he lets on. (Likewise, disrupting the mood was equally fun)."[14]
  • "And, of course, an episode called Chum Bucket List is not without its chum! I’m a pretty squeamish person and yet drawing fish guts shooting out of Patrick's teeth left me unbothered. Quite the opposite! It was a great chance to hone my FX animation muscles."[15]
    • "I tried to rectify some of the emotional damage by making sure Patrick's I'M GONNA LIVE epiphany was as charming and cute as everything-covered-with-fish-guts could be. There is no creature who looks cuter covered in chum than an exuberant sponge."[16]

Trivia[]

General[]

  • This episode was originally titled "The Chum Bucket List," and its working title was "PatrickShowCHUMBUCKETLIST."[1]
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick are walking downtown, storyboards show he was originally going to say "I'm tellin' ya, Patrick, the whole day is our oyster!"[1]
  • This episode's title is a pun on the phrase "the bucket list," which is term that refers to a list of things where someone tries to make achievements in their life.
  • Despite being copywritten in 2024, this episode was produced, completed, and released in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.
  • This episode was paired up with a rerun of "Tying the Klop-Knot" during the original American airing.[17]
  • This episode premiered on the same day as the one-hour series finale of Danger Force and a new episode of That Girl Lay Lay.
  • This episode breaks the fourth wall twice:
    • Patrick rips through multiple outfits to get ready for his fight, from a tutu, to a recreation of the episode's storyboard, to the track recording script.
    • When SpongeBob tells Patrick if they can go to the doctor after he puts on the show of a lifetime, Patrick replies, "I don't know. Let's see how much screentime this gag takes up first." During his sentence, the scene zooms in to reveal a black background with a duration time, as well as the episode's production code and the scene number.
  • Patrick's pitched up voice during the scene where he orders chum is similar to his Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years voice at certain points.
  • The "World of Friendship" montage reuses backgrounds from earlier episodes:
    • The ice cream background is taken from "Enemies à la Mode," during the scene after Patrick tastes his first ice cream.
    • The lawn background when SpongeBob and Patrick are jellyfishing was previously used in "Patrick's Alley."
    • The S.S. Super Minnow background is taken from a scene in "Terror at 20,000 Leagues" where Quasar runs from the alien invader.
    • For the scene of SpongeBob and Patrick watching a movie, the background used is from the theater in Cecil's RV in "Survivoring." In this episode, it is recolored to be daytime and horizontally flipped.
  • This episode is similar in plot to the SpongeBob SquarePants season 2 episode "Dying for Pie," as both episodes involve one character (Squidward there, SpongeBob here) trying to do the most they can with another (SpongeBob there, Patrick here) when it is believed they are going to die after thinking they ate dangerous food.

Episode references[]

Chum Bucket List 012

SpongeBob and Patrick in their season 1 designs, The Patrick Star Show style.

  • The Goofy Goober truck from "Enemies à la Mode" appears during the opening sequence.
  • In the storyboards, Patrick says that Plankton is always advertising on his show. Plankton has previously advertised his restaurant in "Late for Breakfast" and "The Patrick Show Sells Out."
    • This line, along with the accompanying scene of Plankton advertising the Chum Bucket, is cut from the final episode, most likely for time.
Chum Bucket List 021

The explosion from three SpongeBob episodes.

  • During the shot of SpongeBob and Patrick in their season 1 designs during the "World of Friendship" song, they are standing in front of the Snack Bar/Smoothie Hut in Goo Lagoon, referencing "Ripped Pants," "MuscleBob BuffPants" and "Walking Small."
    • However, the designs were storyboarded to channel the style of "Help Wanted" according to Eliza Herndon, who was ecstatic to sneak them in: "I tried to channel a little bit of the Help Wanted-style wonkiness with SpongeBob there!--as someone who lives and breathes that era! The S1 style was my default art style when drawing SB fanart before getting scooped up onto the real deal and remains my favorite season to date, so it was really special being able to indulge in that!!"[3]
    • Also during the song is a shot of Robot SpongeBob from Welcome to the Chum Bucket hanging out with Pat-Tron.
    • After the song, the atomic bomb explosion from Operation: Crossroads is reused from "Dying for Pie," "The Krusty Plate," "Frozen Face-Off," and "Neptune's Ball." Only this time, it is sped up and shows the whole clip.
  • Patrick's ballerina outfit from "Mid-Season Finale" reappears when he accidentally changes into it before fighting the robots.
  • Patrick's boxing and stuntman outfit from "A Root Galoot" and "Stuntin'" return in two different sequences.
  • Patrick's bucket list includes "become French." He previously dressed up as a Frenchman in "The Wrath of Shmandor."

Cultural references[]

  • The "World of Friendship" song is a parody of '80s sitcoms intros.
  • The tic-tac-toe marking on Patrick's bucket list is a reference to the tic-tac-toe marking seen on the chalkboard that is in Daffy and Porky's jail cell in the 1943 Looney Tunes cartoon, Porky Pig's Feat.[5]
  • A Nickelodeon-branded bicycle can be seen while SpongeBob and Patrick do their Broadway act.

Errors[]

  • When Patrick says that he can cross off the first three items off his list, he is seen crossing off four.
  • The items on Patrick's list change throughout the episode whenever the bucket is seen.
  • When SpongeBob and Patrick get stomped on, they are still 2D, but in the next frame, they are in clay.
