Plot

When Mr. Krabs' first dime goes missing, he accuses Squidward of stealing it. After a heated argument with his boss, Squidward quits his job. SpongeBob meets Squidward outside of the restaurant insisting that if Squidward ever needs anything, he can seek help from him.

Time passes and SpongeBob encounters Squidward again. Squidward has become a hobo, and now lives in a cardboard box. SpongeBob takes Squidward into his own home in order to nurse him until he can look for a new job. That very night, Squidward keeps on calling SpongeBob for various reasons each time, which ends with SpongeBob falling down the stairs. Gary tries to tell Spongebob that Squidward is taking advantage of him, but Spongebob is in denile. Many months later, Squidward has become completely dependent upon SpongeBob, turning him into a manservant of sorts (he is forced to wear a maids outfit). SpongeBob is finally begining to lose his patience when time cards fly so much that the old narrator got tired of waiting so long and they had to hire a new one. SpongeBob conveys several hints to Squidward in order to push him towards finding work (for example, when serving Squidward a bowl of alphabet soup, SpongeBob arranges the letters to read "GET A JOB").

These hints are of no use, so when SpongeBob tries to make it as simple as he can by acually talking and not using hints, and Squidward still dosn't notice, Spongebob accualy takes the bed Squidward is lying on, runs with it through the upstairs wall, and tries to convince Mr. Krabs to give Squidward his old job back. Mr. Krabs refuses, even after Spongebob offers him more than just one dime, SpongeBob gets extremely angry and begins to strangle Mr. Krabs until he finds that his first dime (a large coin-shaped rock; Mr. Krabs explains that he has "been in business [for] a long time") was in his pocket. He restores Squidward's position, but then claims that it was Squidward who placed the dime in his pocket, beginning a new dispute. SpongeBob is shown putting on his maid outfit while the two are still arguing.

Quotes

  • ( SpongeBob is making a TV show using hand puppets and using different voices for the puppets while Squidward is in bed watching the TV)

(Puppet 2 is whistling while going to work)

Puppet 1: Hey, where are you going?
Puppet 2: To my job.
Puppet 1: You have a job?
Puppet 2: Why wouldn't I? I'm not some lazy, inconsiderate jerk who lays in bed all day.
Puppet 1: Say, where can I get one of these...jobs?
Puppet 2: Oh, they're everywhere. Especially if you're green and have six tentacles.
Puppet 1: Thanks, I'm gonna go look for one. So I can stop (SpongeBob normal voice) MOOCHING OFF MY FRIENDS AND THEY CAN GET BACK TO THEIR LIVES!!!!
Squidward: (While pushing button on a remote and the TV doesn't change channels) This isn't my show. SpongeBob the remote control's broken! Get over here and fix it!
SpongeBob: I've got a better idea! (Throws away TV and hops on the bed) Why don't I call someone whose job it is to fix it? You know why? Because when I need a JOB done, I get someone with a JOB to do that JOB!!!!
Squidward: What are you saying?
SpongeBob: (Jumps out of his house pushing the bed with Squidward in it towards the Krusty Krab) AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • SpongeBob: But you and me, we're like brothers...only closer. (SpongeBob lifts up part of Squidward's shirt, revealing a part of skin that connects SpongeBob with squidward.)
Squidward: AAAAH! (jumps away)
  • (SpongeBob grabs Mr. Krabs) SpongeBob: Listen up you crustacious cheapskate, Squidward's been living at my house driving me crazy. And you won't hire him back all because of a stupid dime! (a big dime falls to the ground.) What's that?

Cultural References/Trivia/Goofs

  • The episode name comes from the 1930s song Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?.
  • In this episode they said the old narrator got tired and hired a new one, but in other episodes the same French Narrator is heard (this is only temporary, and is a joke in the episode).
  • Squidward refuses to drink the lemonade because the wedge has three seeds in it, but it would be hard for some viewers to see all three seeds.
  • This is the first episode where someone ever said the word "dime"
  • It is revealed in this episode that Mr. Krabs keeps a Yap Island coin in the back of the cash register
  • The title card background for this episode is the same as Opposite Day and I Had an Accident.
  • In the puppet show/TV show scene, SpongeBob says that Squidward is "green and has six tentacles". However, Squidward is actually a shade of blue.
  • This is the first episode where SpongeBob becomes a slave in his own home, the second time was in the episode Rock-a-Bye Bivalve.
  • The title card has the same music as New Leaf and Goo Goo Gas.
  • Second title card text with a (?).
  • This is the first time the time card sequence broke the fourth wall. The second is Wet Painters when Patrick ran out of cards. This time it said the narrator was tired and they had to hire a new one.
  • This is the first time SpongeBob cooked scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, toast, orange juice, and American Style Breakfast.
  • How can a dime that BIG can fit in a resigster?

The second was Rock A-Bye Bivalve.

  • There is also a special dime in Wet Painters.
  • When the giant dime falls Mr. Krabs says he was in buisness for a long time. But as we see in Ugh He is nothing but an inch tall back then so how did he carry a huge stone? Those were Mr. Krabs decendants after all he is only 66 years old your missing the joke, also it's possible that he first worked in a museum or for a collecter who couldn't pay him so they gave him that anceint dime instead after all they are worth a lot of money, one more thing Ugh is set in the preistoric days before man evolved Patchy was mistaken in thinking that they were around the same time those dimes did not appear for another couple of million years.

shouldn't Mr. Krabs' first dime be worth more than a dime since the bigger they were the more they were worth and that one was bigger than Mr. Krabs? You have forgot that Mr. Krabs is only 6" tall.
