Plot

When Mr. Krabs' first dime goes missing, he accuses Squidward of stealing it. After a heated argument with his boss, Squidward quits his job. SpongeBob meets Squidward outside of the restaurant insisting that if Squidward ever needs anything, he can seek help from him.

Time passes and SpongeBob encounters Squidward again. Squidward is a "loser" and has lost his home, job, and possessions, and now lives in a cardboard box which is also taken away. SpongeBob takes Squidward into his own home in order to nurse him until he can look for a new job. Although he at first promises to only stay a few days, Squidward stays many months without even attempting to find work, and becomes completely dependent upon SpongeBob, turning him into a manservant of sorts. An angry SpongeBob conveys several hints to Squidward in order to push him towards finding work (for example, when serving Squidward a bowl of alphabet soup, SpongeBob arranges the letters to read "GET A JOB").

These hints are of no use, and a furious SpongeBob agressively tries to convince Mr. Krabs to give Squidward his old job back. Mr. Krabs refuses until he finds that his first dime (a large coin-shaped rock; Mr. Krabs explains that he has "been in business (for) a long time") was in his pocket. He restores Squidward's position, but then claims that it was Squidward who placed the dime in his pocket, beginning a new dispute.

SpongeBob: I've got a better idea! (Throws away TV and hops on the bed) Why don't I call someone whose job it is to fix it? You know why? Because when I need a JOB done, I get someone with a JOB to do that JOB!!!!

Squidward: What are you saying?

SpongeBob: (Jumps out of his house pushing the bed with Squidward in it towards the Krusty Krab) AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! (arrives at the Krusty Krab in Mr.Krabs's office)

Mr.Krabs: Donate to the children's fund, Why!? What have children ever done for me!??!

SpongeBob: Here, is this your dime!!?? (Mr.Krabs gets out a microscope and starts to examine it)

Mr.Krabs: Nope.

SpongeBob: (starts to throw dimes at Mr.Krabs)

SpongeBob: (to Squidward)We're like brothers...only closer. (SpongeBob lifts up part of Squidward's shirt, revealing a part joining them together.)

'Squid'ward: AAAAH! (jumps away)

Trivia

• The episode name comes from the 1930s song Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?. SpongeBob references the first word of the phrase by saying to Squidward "We're like brothers", and then shows his heart attached to Squidward's.
• This episode jokingly claims that the French Narrator got tired of waiting for Squidward to leave and quit, and that they hired a new one (with a British-like accent)
• Mr. Krabs' first "dime" is a stone-age wheel.
• SpongeBob would again become a slave in his own home in "Rock-a-Bye Bivalve".
• When SpongeBob leaves the room where Squidward is staying, it is revealed that his "uniform" is tied on and so his underwear is visible.
• During the breakfast in bed scene, there is a cereal box with the Nickelodeon logo in the top-left corner.
