SpongeBob heard Mr. Krabs say that he was gonna let "the little guy" go. But why didn't Mr. Krabs tell SpongeBob that he meant that "the little guy" was the pet scallop he was letting go?

He didn’t mean to fire SpongeBob. And also why didn’t Mr. Krabs tell SpongeBob that he was talking about letting his little scallop go and not SpongeBob?

SpongeBob: *Begging* Please take me back!

Mr. Krabs: Boy, what are you going on about?!

SpongeBob: I heard you saying you were gonna let the little guy go! But I don't wanna go!

Mr. Krabs: "Let the little guy go?" Oh *laughs*, I wasn't talking about you, me boy!

SpongeBob: *Sniffles* You weren't?

Mr. Krabs: No, silly! I was talking about me pet scallop who outgrew his cage! I'd never get rid of ya, you're me best moneymaker!

This would've made Mr. Krabs seem like less of a jerk if you ask me.
