The sixth season of the American animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants, created by former marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg, was announced on December 12, 2006.[1][2][3][4] Season 6 first aired on March 3, 2008 with the episode "Krabby Road" and ended on July 5, 2010 with "The Clash of Triton." The first five episodes aired in the "Gimme 5" Week. The next five new episodes aired during the first week of June 2008, which is titled "SpongeBob Premiere Factor 5" (or SPF 5). Another premiere week aired through August 4 – 8, titled "Bikini Bottom Confidential." Seven new premieres of season 6 aired during Super Stuffed Nicksgiving Weekend. Two episodes aired on February 16 as part of Presidents' Day 4 day weekend, and three new episodes aired afterward as part of "Triple Play." Another set of episodes aired between March 16 – 20, 2009 in "The Bob Squad." An eighth special, "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One," aired on April 17, 2009 with guest star, Johnny Depp, as Jack Kahuna Laguna. There also was the "Deep Sea Danger Zone," which had 5 new episodes premiere during the first week of June. A 100-episode marathon was scheduled for July 17 through the 19th, including the episodes "To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants," "Overbooked," and "No Hat for Pat."
In Region 1, the first half of this season was released on Season 6 Volume 1 on December 8, 2009 and the other half on Season 6 Volume 2 on December 7, 2010. Two years later, the entire season was released in complete DVD set in Region 1 on November 13, 2012.

Trivia
- This is the first season to end with a double-length episode.
- This is the first season to not include the underwater ambience sound effect used in the previous five seasons.
- This is the first season to have 26 half-hour episodes.
- This is the first season to finish its broadcast after the 2009 Nickelodeon rebrand. However, majority of the season still aired before the rebrand.
- This is the first season to have a widescreen episode. Another widescreen episode was produced for Season 8. But the series wouldn't permanently switch over to widescreen until Season 9.
- Beginning with this season, there is no fade from black to the title card; instead it cuts from black.
- This is the only season not to have an episode receiving under 3 million viewers.
- According to concept art for the episodes, the first several half-hours of this season were produced in mid-to-late 2007. However, they were all copyrighted in 2008.
- "The Clash of Triton" is the only episode to premiere in 2010.
- This season was affected by the 2007–08 Writers Guild of America strike; on November 6, it was announced that various writers from the show were fired.[18]
